5 of the Best Video Games with the Worst Replay Value

Linear Games Typically Don't Get Played Through More Then Once

Nicholas Ward
What makes a game so good you have to play it twice? For me the answer is the story line. Just because a game has no replay value doesn't necessarily mean that it's a bad game; it could be loads of fun the first time through, but if you complete it in less than 20 hours, and the storyline is thin; you're just not going to want to pick it up again. These 5 games display just those characteristics. (A run through of the game will leave you feeling like perhaps it was all too quick) This is my list of 5 games with the worst replay value.

5 of t he best video games with the worst replay value: Doom 1,2,3

Doom was one of the very first games to break away from the platformer line that had taken the world by storm in the late 80's to early nineties, but let's face it Doom has zero replay value absolutely none. Once you have played Doom all the way through once; you know where every switch is, exactly when a demon is about to pounce, and where all the strongest demons are.

If you actually play through a third time, by then you probably have all the cheats. The most fun there is to have in this game once you have beaten it, is using the BFG with god mode out of sheer boredom, just to paint the wall with guts.

5 of t he best video games with the worst replay value: Grandia 1,2

Grandia 2 has a great storyline, a quirky look, and a PC port; all of which help it very little in terms of replay-ability. When it comes to replay-ability one of the most important factors to consider, is how a story can change or evolve. Grandia 2, as great as it is, does not have an evolving or changing storyline. What Grandia 2 has is an involving, but extremely linear storyline that is only great the first time through. The length of Grandia 2 is at most 30 hours, leaving much to be desired in the length of story category as well.

5 of t he best video games with the worst replay value: Quake 1,2,3

Quake is another one of those games that you typically play on a day when you just want to see a splash of blood on the wall or an exploding demon. Quake is not that much different from its predecessors Doom and Wolfenstein each level is enclosed and linear. The switches and bosses are always in the same places, and there are only a handful of demons which will appear, no matter how many times you play through it. Later Quake games made up for this a little by creating multiplayer modes, which make different game play elements an everyday thing.

5 of t he best video games with the worst replay value: Metal Gear Solid 1,2

Metal Gear Solid has a timed game play system, which means that every character in the game will be in a certain position at a certain time. (Assuming you haven't altered their time line by making too much noise.) What this means is that once you have played through it once there is no reason to push through it again. After the first play through, you already know where every character will be, allowing you to easily slit their throats based off memory. Though the story is very interesting, it doesn't evolve any further or differently the second time you play through.

5 of the best video games with the worst replay value: Final Fantasy X,X2

One of my biggest complaints in an RPG is being too linear, which is exactly what Square did to the Final Fantasy franchise with these games. Even if you gave me a new game plus feature for FFX-X2, I couldn't play through it a second time.

The story isn't that long and involving, and it's as linear as it gets. Final Fantasy X-X2 forces you to move from one area to the next in the proper order without exception, and removes the old airship secrets from the genre. One of the most fun parts about playing an RPG is exploring the opened up world in an air-ship, and finding secret areas that could not be discovered until the end of the game.

In FFX-X2 if you want to explore you have to deal with tedious runs across land or simply "teleport" from one area to another. (I say teleport because once you select the area on the map you are simply taken there without control over stops between)

Though all these games are fun, not one of them I could stand a second play through. These games all have one thing in common, linear game play, and it's the worst thing to happen to gaming since sports games for the Atari.

  • FFX was great the first time through.
  • FFX-2 sucked right from the start feeling more like a 'Charlie's Angles' rerun then a FF game.
  • Doom and Quake are among the top in games with the worst replay value.
Typically RPG games have the highest replay value in my book. However, when they don't incorporate new game+ functions, bonus dungeons, or even cool transportation they lose their position.
