5 of my favorite Bible verses, and why I love them:
"...the truth shall set you free." John 8:32. If we think of the Truth as living in the God's love, then we can say that God's love will set us free. All major religions have commonalities, or in other words, all major religions have the same basic Truth. In this sense, we are all brothers and sisters. Everyone. No matter what each person's god or religion is called. When we live in Truth, we are free of the boundaries and constrictions that worldliness puts upon us, and are truly able to "love our neighbors as ourselves." (Paraphrase from Matthew 22:39: "Love your neighbor as yourself.")
".... A man reaps what he sows." Galatians 6:7. This is another way of saying hatred begets hatred, love begets love; which I find so inspirational when I'm having a difficult time with forgiveness. Not being able to forgive is, to me, another form of hatred; so if I walk around with hatred in my heart, I'm opening myself up to attracting more hatred. On the other hand, if I live each day in the light of love, I'm attracting light and love. This a universal truth seen in nature, science, and spirituality.
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give as the world gives. Do not be afraid and do not let your hearts be troubled." John 14:27. There aren't very many direct quotes from Jesus in the Bible, and this is one of them. There are so many reasons I love these words. First, Jesus came to give us peace. How comforting that is! How simple, yet profound. Secondly, He doesn't give as the world gives, meaning we needn't concern ourselves with the pettiness this world can bring. All of our problems are of this world, because the Kingdom of God doesn't have problems. Therefore, when we live in Jesus' peace, we don't need to be afraid of anything from this world, and our hearts will not be troubled!
"If we are faithless He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself?" 2 Timothy 2:13. This is a great passage because we are sometimes are not faithful. We may want to be, but then life (or the world) gets in the way. But that doesn't matter! Because when we are faithless, He is faithful! The second part- "for He cannot deny Himself" is so powerful, because the light of God is in each and everyone one of us. For some, it shines brightly; for others, it's hidden... but it's still there! God is in everyone, that's why He's faithful to us regardless of what we do. As the hymn says, "Great is Thy faithfulness....There is no shadow of turning with Thee."
"...stand firm in the faith..." 1 Corinthians 13:16. I like this verse because it's so simple, it's almost like a mantra.
Live in love, act in peace, stand in faith.
