5 New Businesses Come to Town, 2 Close

Hopkinsville has seen many changes over the past few years. Soon, they will see a few more.

Rite Aid, which has housed itself in a couple of small store fronts in town before, has built a new building where the old Winn Dixie once stood. It is now a large, free standing store, which opened this past week. The new building is located on Ft. Campbell Boulevard across from the Country Club Lane intersection.

Pirate's Pizza opened recently in the old Duke's Yamaha building. It offers games, similar to Chuck E Cheese's, but also areas so adults without children can eat. There is part of a large pirate ship inside for children to climb on a play in, as well as televisions. Children can play games for tickets which they can then redeem for prizes. Pirate's Pizza has pizza, salad, and ice cream, and also has birthday party packages available.

Quizno's Subs has also come to town. Located in the Skyline Shopping Center on Ft. Campbell Boulevard, Quizno's offers both hot and cold subs, as well as a variety of extras.

Also opening soon is Jersey Mike's Subs. It will be located toward the nothern end of Ft. Campbell Boulevard in the same shopping center as Papa John's. It is unclear the exact opening date, but the store is close to completion.

Dairy Queen is building a store in front of Lowe's. Hopkinsville has been lacking a Dairy Queen since the old one next to Herb Hayes Furniture closed several years ago. At the time, the owners were not prepared to change the format of Dairy Queen the way the corporate store wanted. Instead of putting more money into the store, they decided to close. Recently, work started on the new store which will have the Grill and Chill theme most Dairy Queens have gone to.

When some things come, some things go. Sam Goody's will be closing. Sam Goody's took over the space from On Cue several years ago and have operated quietly in the Skyline Shopping Center next to Rent-a-Center. Most items are on sale 50%-75%, while CD's and video games are currently 10% off. Sam Goody's expects to be closed by the end of the month.

Wood's Drugs, which has been in the downtown area (albiet with different names) since 1938, will also be closing by the end of the month. Wood's was bought out by the new Rite Aid, which also hired the Wood's Drugs employees. Owner George Koffeen said it was a difficult decision to sell, but another opportunity of that sort may not have arisen again. Wood's Drugs is located on Main Street.
