5 Cheap Fall Weekend Getaway Ideas

Sheila Chase

Here are 5 of the best, cheap weekend getaways to take this fall.

Buffalo Gap. Do you want to step back into Texas history? You can easily do this by visiting Buffalo Gap, Texas. This small town resembles a town of ages past because most everything is within walking distance. It is a tranquil place that holds a monthly flea market and even has a historic town right in the midst of everything else. You can stay the night here at one of the local bed and breakfasts for the cheap price of $100 per night, and then you can spend your day browsing the small shops and visiting the old, historic town. Buffalo Gap delivers a lot of history and tranquility for your money, and you might even leave with some money left in your pocket after this weekend getaway.

Paint Rock Caves. It won't cost you much, if anything, to view the Indian Pictographs at Paint Rock Texas. You can't call ahead, though. You have to actually drive to the site in this tiny West Texas town to make tour arrangements, but you'll be glad that you did. Fred and Kay Campbell, owners of the private property, will greet you and lead you through the tour. Plan to stay all day because there is plenty to see. For specific directions on how to get to the pictographs (once in Paint Rock), visit gourmetgarlicgardens.com/paintrock.html. You'll spend very little money for the rich history that you'll get when you visit the Paint Rock pictographs. This is the ideal fall weekend getaway.

Brady Goat Cook Off. Visit the Labor Day weekend goat cook off in Brady, Texas, for some good eating and some Texas elbow rubbing. Brady holds its yearly goat cook off in Richards Park just on the edge of town. A long, winding road takes you down to this beautifully shaded park. Vendors line the road, and you'll see camper trailers all weekend. Don't plan on staying the night in Brady, though. You won't find a room anywhere, especially a cheap one. The Brady hotels allow booking one year in advance. You can stay at the Budget Inn in Coleman, Texas for just under $50, so book early for your fall getaway.

Cabot Fall Fest. Join the locals in Cabot, Arkansas as they celebrate the fall weather. Cabot Fall Fest takes place this year on September 26-27 and benefits the Arkansas Children's Hospital. You can join in on a 5K run, listen to country music star Billy Jewell, and eat some delicious chili at the chili cook off. If you plan to stay all weekend for your getaway, then book your lodging at Days Inn in Beebe, approximately 10 miles outside of Cabot. You will likely get a better rate, and this hotel is fairly new, so you will have comfortable sleeping accommodations.

Madison County Covered Bridge Festival. Become a part of Madison County, at least for a weekend, as you attend the yearly covered bridge festival this year on October 10-11 in Winterset, Iowa. According to madisoncounty.com/bridge_fest.html, you can enjoy the antique car parade, the car show, the quilt show, guided tours of the bridges, and nonstop food and entertainment. Book your room early to make sure that you do actually get lodging for this event. Also, you might want to consider staying at a local bed and breakfast to secure the cheapest room rates for your fall getaway.
