5 Christmas Gift Ideas for Kids: Baking, Cooking, and Kitchen Play

Kay Whittenhauer
Is there a kid on your Christmas list who loves to spend time in the kitchen? Here are great gift ideas for kids who love to cook and bake!

Kids Aprons and Chef's Hats
Growing Cooks has the most adorable aprons and chef's hats for kids. If you know a kid who loves to help in the kitchen, this gift is perfect! You can even have the apron and hat embroidered with his name, or make up a name for "his restaurant".

Hats and aprons start at $7.95 each (without embroidery, it's an additional $7.95 for embroidery).

Play Kitchen Set
There are a lot play kitchen sets on the market, from simple to elaborate. Fisher Price, Playskool, and Little Tikes are the best-known brand names for plastic sets. Pottery Barn has a really cool retro kitchen set in pink- it even has a "real" sink to wash dishes in! IKEA has a pretty cool play kitchen set. If the house has got the IKEA look, you have to get an IKEA kitchen play set!

Play kitchen sets can be anywhere from $49 to $400, depending on what you get. It's best to shop around before purchasing one.

Gingerbread House Kit
If you have a creative kid on your Christmas gift list, he'll love a gingerbread house kit. They come in all different shapes and sizes, with all different kinds of decorations. You can add your own decorations with candy canes, M&M's, or gumdrops; and by using different colors of frosting. Decorating gingerbread houses is a fun activity for kids ages 10 and under.

Gingerbread House Kits can be purchased at craft supply stores, drug stores, and most major grocery stores. They're usually priced at $7.99 and up.

Easy Bake Oven
Easy Bake Ovens have been on kids' Christmas lists for decades, and for good reason- they're really fun! If you've got a little one on your list who loves to bake, give her her own "play" oven where she can bake real treats!

Easy Bake Ovens are available at major retailers like Toys R Us, Kmart, and Amazon.com for under $30.

Icee Maker
I remember one Christmas when my son wanted an Icee Maker like nothing else. Long story short: it's been sitting on a shelf in the basement ever since. It takes about 10 minutes of working up a sweat cranking that thing to make a two ounce sno-cone. Oh, well. It was a relatively inexpensive gift and he was happy to get it, so it was worth it.

Icee makers can be purchased at major retailers and on-line, starting at around $10 (on sale) and up, depending on the model.

The little cook on your Christmas list will be delighted with any of these gift ideas.

I love these gift ideas, Kay! My 5-year old is getting an apron with kid-sized cooking utensils (rolling pin, whisk, wooden spoon, measuring spoons, etc.), plus a cookbook filled with fun, easy recipes for parents and kids to make together!

These are awesome ideas, Kay. I've used them all except the snow cone maker, but nice to have a reminder!
