5 Common Misconceptions About Christianity

Eleanthe Anderson
While Christianity is widely believed to be the chosen religion of the American people, there are still many misconceptions about the Christian faith. In fact, that statement is probably one of them. America was founded upon an ideal of religious freedom, and the separation of church and state, a radical departure from religious practice in Europe at the time. Although many of the people that make up our nation are Christian, there are still widespread misconceptions about the faith and its practice. Here are five common misconceptions:

1. Christians believe that they are "forgiven" so it doesn't matter what they do. Christians do believe that Christ earned them forgiveness for sins on the cross, but they also believe in the bible, which discusses good deeds and the proper life that should be lived by a good Christian.

2. All Christians are conservatives. Many Christian people lead a spiritual life in accordance to the teachings of the bible. The main tenet of being a good Christian in the bible is to do good works for other people. Living and doing good deeds for others is not a conservative policy, but rather a liberal one. It is possible to be liberal and be Christian.

3. If you are an American, then you are a Christian. As previously mentioned, the United States is a diverse nation made up of people from many religions living in harmony. To be a true Christian, a person must be a follower of Jesus Christ. That is to believe that he died for your sins, and was resurrected. That is the main tenet of the religion.

4. Christians believe that you have to be baptized to go to heaven. This is false. The bible teaches that a man cannot be judged by works or deeds. While he should be baptized as a public declaration of his dedication, it is not the only factor in determining whether he will go to heaven or not.

5. All good people are Christians. As we know of other religions, they all teach people to be "good." To be Christian is to believe in Jesus Christ, as explained in number 3. Christians believe that being a "good" person is the result of living a Christian life.

These are a few misconceptions that are generally stated in regards to the Christian faith. While Christianity is widely practiced in this country, it appears to be just as misunderstood as every other religion.

Good read! I confess I've had some of these misconceptions myself until I got to know a few people on Associated Content.

Okay, No. 1 is wrong, if you are a Catholic. We were never taught we were automatically saved. But many protestant religions believe in predestination, meaning that is is preordained when you are born whether you are saved or not.
