Tobacco:
We all know that tobacco is dangerous to humans, but it can be fatal to dogs if they ingest tobacco. Even one cigarette if eaten by a small dog can kill the dog. This doesn't have to just be cigarettes or cigars, anything with nicotine in can be fatal. Stop smoking patches, chewing tobacco, and even cigarette butts will contain nicotine. Most dogs will throw up after eating nicotine. Nicotine can stay in the animal for up to 12 hours or more. There are some signs that your dog will exhibit if they are having reactions to nicotine, and are poisoned by nicotine, tremors, excitement, vomiting, and diarrhea. You should call your vet and ask them advice on how to treat the animal or take the animal to the nearest vet if you suspect they ate tobacco.
Rat poisoning:
Rat and mouse poisoning come in many different brands, and they are easy to use if you have a rodent problem. It's an easy way to get rid of the rodents, but this can be very dangerous to your pet. It will prevent the blood from clotting, and without immediate treatment the pet can die within days. If you suspect your dog ate some rat poisoning, look for bleeding. My dog bled from his nose but they can bleed from any opening. It is important to take your pet to the vets for testing and treatment if they ate rat or mouse poisoning.
Antifreeze
If your pet has drank antifreeze it can be fatal to them depending on how much they drank. They will appear drunk, and may be stumbling. They may throw up, and urinate frequently. If they haven't drunk too much they may be helped with treatment from the vets.
Marijuana:
The good news is, you can tell your vet if you think your dog ate pot, and he doesn't have to report it to the police. To get your dog the correct treatment you may have to come clean and tell them the truth. Dogs sometimes will eat marijuana and the symptoms are they will appear high. They may throw up, and may not be able to move. You will need to take them to the vets for treatment if the symptoms are severe.
Chocolate:
Candy is favored by many but chocolate is very dangerous to dogs. Even small doses of chocolate can be fatal to small dogs. If your dog is suffering from chocolate overdose you will notice that they have muscle spasms and be overly active.
These are some of the common toxins that are harmful to your dogs. There are more toxins out there that are harmful to your dog, but these are common. Dogs are sometimes like small children they will want to sample and explore many things. In case of emergency keep your vet's number handy to contact in an emergency.
