5 Decorating Themes for a Black Christmas Tree

Amanda King
I bought a black Christmas tree last year and I thought it was the best thing ever. That was true until I got it home and realized that we really didn't have much to decorate the black Christmas tree with. The little black tree ended up having a Star Wars and moose theme that was quickly thrown together for the Christmas holiday. That kind of mish-mash decorating theme seems to work well with the traditional Christmas trees, but black Christmas trees beg for a structured theme since they stand out.

Still have no idea how to decorate your black Christmas tree? Well, I've come up with five themes for a black Christmas tree. And since I'm in the holiday spirit, I'm going to go ahead and share them. Take these decorating themes and mix them up if you wish. Add your own flair. The best part about decorating a black Christmas tree is the creativity.

Decorating theme for a black Christmas tree #1: Halloween Theme
The Halloween theme for a black Christmas tree is more for the non-traditional. There are some people out there that find Halloween a lot more fun than Christmas. These people feel a bit of sadness when it's time to put the Halloween decorations away for the year. Well, with a black Christmas tree it's now possible to blend Halloween and Christmas. The purple string of lights look great with the black Christmas tree. The post Halloween sales always offer up little spooky baubles to use as ornaments on your tree. Try to go for ghosts, bats, and pumpkins for ornaments. The cobwebs that is sold during the Halloween months can be used on branches of the black Christmas tree instead of garland.

Decorating theme for a black Christmas tree #2: A Nightmare Before Christmas Theme
My favorite of the black Christmas tree themes is the A Nightmare Before Christmas theme. You may be able to find Jack Skellington ornaments at your local Hot Topic, but if not it could be a fun project. All you need are white ornaments and some black acrylic paint to paint Jack Skellington faces on the ornaments. Make sure to paint some of the ornaments with black stripes to keep the Tim Burton feel of the movie. A few versions of the little dog Zero can be made with tissue, just don't forget his bright red nose. Use any kind of lights and garland- any color would look great with this theme. And for the tree topper: Oogie Boogie.

Decorating theme for a black Christmas tree #3: Black and White Theme
Probably the simplest of all the themes, the black and white theme will give your black Christmas tree a minimalist and modern look. White garland and white lights will also look great with this theme. If the white ornaments is too much of a stark contrast, painting different patterns on the ornaments with black paint will add some interest and help break up the stark look.

Decorating theme for a black Christmas tree #4: Silver and Gold
You can either choose gold, silver, or a mix silver and gold. Anyway you choose, it will look stunning against the dark background of a black Christmas tree. If the silver and gold theme sounds too garish, then start slow. Perhaps the look of garland is important to you or the garland can be replaced with the beads. Simple white lights work great with the silver and gold theme.

Decorating theme for a black Christmas tree #5: Any color theme
Pick a color, any color. It could be purple, blue, red, or green. Much like the silver and gold theme, a black Christmas tree can be decorated with one color in mind. There's a lot of freedom here. Darker shades look great on black Christmas trees as well as the brighter shades. If you feel daring, you can mix them up a bit. An example would be pairing royal purple with a lighter shade of purple. Some silver and gold could also be added the the black Christmas tree.

Decorating a black Christmas tree with a theme doesn't have to be daunting. Everything goes with black. All you have to do is use your imagination.
