5 DIY Mardi Gras Costume Ideas Based on Catholic Saints

Homemade Mardi Gras costume ideas based on Catholic saints make a lot of sense. Fat Tuesday is rooted in Catholic traditions. Plus, these 5 saints have been around a lot longer than the New Orleans Saints football team.

The lives of the saints and their symbols are pretty familiar to me from being raised Catholic. With these DIY Mardi Gras costume ideas, you'll get a range of options for men and women and couples. I also tried to address different capacities for gruesome details.

Saint Agatha: Saint Agatha is a pretty violent story, but she may be the Catholic saint most closely associated with breasts. And breasts get flashed a lot in New Orleans on Fat Tuesday. Agatha rejected the advances of a Roman official and got punished by having her breasts amputated before dying in prison. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, young women can make an easy costume by wearing a veil and putting a dish under their breasts. Otherwise you could carry a dish with fake breasts or just loaves of bread.

Bernadette of Lourdes: Bernadette of Lourdes has a much gentler story. You can dress up as a nun, carry an embroidery project, and talk about seeing visions of the Virgin Mary. For a couples costume, the guy could be Bernard of Montjoux who St. Bernard dogs are named after. Just wear an old fur coat, add a tail and tie a thermos of brandy around your neck.

Saint Genevieve: I don't think New Orleans has a patron saint so go with the patron saint of Paris. With Genevieve, you can wear any flowing gown and carry a loaf of bread symbolizing her charity to those in need.

John the Baptist: If you're a man who doesn't want to spend a lot of time explaining his Mardi Gras costume, many people will recognize John the Baptist. Just rumple your hair and carry a stuffed lamb and cross. You can tear up a fake fur blanket to wear over long underwear if you're modest or don't want to catch a cold.

Saint Veronica: Veronica is an equally recognizable saint costume for women. Carry a cloth with the image of the face of Jesus to symbolize the belief that he left his imprint when she wiped his face.

Hagiography may never become as popular as the New Orleans Saints. Still these DIY Mardi Gras costume ideas will help level the playing field.
