5 Easy Christmas Paper Crafts for Kids

Holiday Arts and Crafts for Children

M.S. Beltran
Two things that are a hit with most kids are holidays and crafts! Whether they are in school or at home, arts and craft projects are a creative way to channel their energy and keep their little hands busy.

Paper Plate Santa Head:

You will need:

1 white paper plate

1 red piece of construction paper

Markers

Craft glue

cotton

Turn the paper plate upside down. On the back of the paper plate, have the child draw Santa's eyes, nose, and mouth.

Cut out a large triangle out of red construction paper, with a base wide enough to go across 1/3 of the way down the paper plate. Glue it on.

Glue cotton balls to create Santa's beard, mustache, eyebrows, and the trim of his hat. Don't forget a little cotton ball for the top of Santa's hat.

Reindeer Antler Head-band

You will need:

Construction paper in red or green

Brown construction paper

Tape

Pencil

Scissors

Cut construction paper in red or green, about one to two inches thick, to make a band long enough to go around the child's head. Measure it around the child's head, and tape it to fit snugly.

Have the child place their hands spread out on brown construction paper. Trace around the child's hands with the pencil.

Cut out the hand prints. Tape the base (bottom of the palm) of the hand prints to the head band, with the fingers sticking up like antlers.

Paper Christmas Stocking:

You Will Need:

Cardstock in seasonal colors or prints

Yarn or ribbon

Tape

Pencil

Christmas stocking template

Hole puncher

Craft glue

cotton

A good stocking template can be found at http://www.first-school.ws/t/pattern/stocking1.html. Use the template to make two cut-out stocking shapes on cardstock in seasonal colors or prints. Place them together.

About ½ inches from the edge of the stocking, punch holes through both sheets at the same time. Make holes going all the way down the sides and around the bottom, approximately ½ inch away from each other. Do not punch holes across the top of the stocking where it would open.

Give the child a length of ribbon or yarn. If you like, you can put a piece of tape rolled up on the edge to make it sturdier, like the plastic edging on a shoe lace, so that it goes through the holes easier. Tie one end of the yarn or ribbon around the edge of the stocking when you put it through the first hole. Let the child sew in and out of the hole around the stocking. Tie it off around the edge at the last hole.

When the child has "sewn" them together, they will open like a stocking and small treats can be placed within.

If you like, glue some cotton to the top edges of the stocking.

Paper Roll Tree Angel:

You Will Need:

Toilet paper roll

White tissue or toilet paper

White card stock paper or index cards

Compass or juice cup to make a circle

Pipe cleaner

Tooth pick or popsicle stick

Crayons or markers

Tape

Use a compass or a narrow cup and a pencil to make a small circle on the white paper, approximately 2" in diameter.

Let the child draw the angels face on the circle. On the back of the circle, tape the popsicle stick or tooth pick. Place the stick or the tooth pick on the inside of the toilet paper roll.

Fashion a small halo out of the pipe cleaner, leaving an inch or two of pipe cleaner at the end. Tape the end of the pipe cleaner onto the back of the head, so that the circular halo comes up above the head of the angel.

Cut more white paper into the shape of wings. Tape it to the back of the toilet paper roll so they stick out on the sides.

Fold tissue or toilet paper strips over the top edge of the toilet paper roll, taping it to the inside, to make the angel's dress.

Poke a hole in the back for an ornament hook, or place over the top branch of the tree as a tree topper.

Christmas Eve Snow Scene Drawing:

One sheet of black or dark blue construction paper

One white crayon

Draw a snowy scene on the paper with the white crayon. The white crayon will show up nicely on the dark background. Make a house, snowman, and little dots for snow flurries.
