One: You can make mom jewelry out of string or yarn and beads. You can use beads of different colors, beads that are the same colors, beads with letters on them to spell out a special message for her, or any combination of the above. Simply tie a know at the end of the string to complete the project. You can easily create necklaces, bracelets or ankle bracelets this way.
Two: Create a pen holder for mom's desk. Take a look around and see what kinds of containers are sitting around unused. You can maybe use an old coffee can, an empty canned good item (with beveled edges so you won't get cut) that has been washed out, a soda pop bottle that an adult cuts the top off of, etc. Make sure the container is cleaned out thoroughly and dried. You can then cover it with construction paper, contact paper or wrapping paper. You can color or draw pictures on it or you can glue items onto it as well. You can write 'Mom' on it or some other message that is special to her. You can even put a new pen or pencil in it so she knows what to use it for.
Three: Making a comic book for mom is as easy as picking up some paper, a pencil and a stapler. Cut pages to size, or use whole sheets. Draw lines to depict the squares for the comic strip, usually three per page and create comic skits on each page. You can make the comic strip one of the family members or you can conjure up any story ideas of your own that you think will make mom smile. You can color them in or leave them in penciled or penned shape.
Four: Create a small garbage can for mom out of empty egg cartons and pieces of cardboard. Use the cardboard for the bottom of the fixture and glue the egg cartons together into a circle and then onto the cardboard piece. Line the product with an empty plastic bag from the grocery store so she will know what it is for. You can use egg cartons of different colors if you like and if you want to, carefully draw pictures or letters on them, or you can keep them plain. If there are not enough cartons call family members and ask them to save theirs for your project.
Five: It is easy to create a purse for mom if you do it out of felt, pipe cleaners, glue and any other spare items you find around the house. Choose an easy shape, such as a lady bug and draw two of them, one for the top and one for the bottom. Cut handles out of felt and glue them to the inside top of the item. Glue the two pieces together, leaving the top open for items to go into. Allow to dry and then decorate at will. You can cut felt pieces out for eyes, nose, mouth, spots, letters, etc. You can also put items like googlie eyes or antennae pipe cleaners on. If you have little pon pons you can use them in any variety of ways to enhance the craft. Taking a look around the house you are sure to find an array of items that you can use for a project like this and you can make it as unique as you would like. Just make sure to let the project dry completely, usually 24 hour, before trying to open it or decorate it.
Creating crafts for mom's big day that are simple and inventive can easily be done by simply taking a look around your house and seeing what items you have for making them. No matter what you choose, take your time making it, and rest assured, mom is going to love it.
