5 Ecologically Friendly but Weird Products

Save the Planet in a Weird Way

1. A Rug made from Real Moss. According to the company that makes this product, Inhabitat http://www.inhabitat.com/2009/01/19/moss-carpet-by-nguyen-la-chanh/ "There's nothing like the feel of grass under your feet." That certainly may be true, and they recommend you place this rug (which is actually made from real, live moss) in your bathroom. The idea is that the bathroom provides a moist environment that will keep the moss alive. So apparently instead of washing the bath mat you mow it.That would be ecologically sound. The matt is made from decay resistant foam, and has three varieties of moss attached to it.

2. Edible Shoe Cream. This shoe polish actually claims you can spread it on toast, put it in drinks, or use it as a lip balm. Oh yes, and it will shine your shoes. The product is called Pozu Edble Shoe cream, http://www.po-zu.com/eat.html Apparently the main ingredient is coconut oil. This is also the main ingredient in many sunscreen products, bout frankly I don't plan to spread that on my toast. I am all for saving the ecology, but not if I have to eat shoe polish.

3. Garments made from Pet Hair. Really. We wear clothes made from the wool of a sheep, and camel hair coats, and even alpaca fleece. An enterprising woman in South Carolina came up with the idea of reusing the fur from her cat to make clothing. Apparently the pet is washed to remove any dander, and then the pet hair is used to make a type of yarn. Catty Shack Creations http://cattyshackcreations.com/09//pur-zazz/ was born. She initially used hair to make purses or as seen on the site; Pur-Zazz. Others are actually making clothing from their pets hair using the same process.

4. Eco Fashion Accessories by Kitten Lab. Remember the IBM Selectric Typewriters (If you do you are as old as I am. Congratulations.) It used a ball that would move around to strike the letters on the paper, rather than keys. Most of these are now in a junk pile. Well, Kitten Labs has found a novel way to recycle the typewriter balls. As earrings. You can get earrings with the full ball, or with just pieces of them. As seen on IGreenSpot.com http://www.igreenspot.com/eco-fashion-accessories-by-kitten-lab/

Finally, the strangest one yet - The ultimate in eco friendly.

5. The Natural Fiber Coffin. This is probably one of the most macabre products I have ever heard of, but if one thinks about it a coffin made from materials that will return to the earth along with the decease actually makes a bit of sense. There are several outlets on the internet where one can purchase a coffin made from bamboo, willow, and other biodegradable materials. One such company, Lunen Woven Wicker Coffins http://www.wovenwickercoffins.com/ offers coffins made in traditional shape, or curved end, made from willow, sea grass or bamboo, with natural hemp handles. Actress Wendy Richard (East Enders, Are You Being Served, was buried in a bamboo coffin.
