5 Essential Pop-Culture and Entertainment Websites

Lisa Miller
A truly great entertainment or pop-culture website can be difficult to find. It seems like many pop-culture websites are just rehashed celebrity gossip and reviews of multiplex movies. There are some pop-culture and entertainment websites, however, that are absolutely essential, whether you are a movie geek, a celebrity-gossip hound, or just want to know what's going on in entertainment.

Essential Pop Culture and Entertainment Websites: AV Club

For the nerdier among us, the AV Club is a decidedly essential pop-culture website. Here you'll find thoughtful and insightful reviews of film, television and music, along with breaking entertainment news and pop-culture features. The focus is definitely on indie favorites and the readers tend to skew towards the geeky and intellectual, so true pop-culture nerds will love it.

Essential Pop Culture and Entertainment Websites: Pajiba

There are a couple of characteristics of the pop-culture and movie-review website Pajiba that make it stand out. The first is the no-holds-barred approach to entertainment and celebrity news, and the second is the real feeling of community on the site. Regular readers and commenters have a dialog with the staff, and the site naturally then reflects its audience. So, if you want biting (and sometimes harsh) critiques of film and television, as well as celebrity news and updates about geeky projects in the works, Pajiba is definitely worth checking out.

Essential Pop Culture and Entertainment Websites: Oh No They Didn't

If there is one word to describe internet behemoth Oh No They Didn't, it's "obsessive." Or maybe "comprehensive." Want to know all the juicy (or mundane) details of your favorite obscure actor's life? It'll be there, alongside post upon post of A-list gossip. ONTD is famed for its posters' ability to break celebrity news before anyone else out there. If you like celebrity gossip, ONTD has plenty to go around.

Essential Pop Culture and Entertainment Websites: Go Fug Yourself

I've always considered the obsession with celebrity fashion to be a rather silly one. Nowhere on the internet does that absurdity shine through as well as on Go Fug Yourself, and I mean that as a compliment. Go Fug Yourself is only about celebrity fashion, and focuses on the most ridiculous red-carpet failures. The tone is gently mocking, conversational and affectionate, and the authors really seem to love finding the biggest sartorial disasters in Hollywood.

Essential Pop Culture and Entertainment Websites: Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten Tomatoes, in my mind, is as essential as it is utilitarian. Sure, it has some features and discussion boards, but the main reason for visiting is the distilled down movie ratings from all across the internet. In recent years, Rotten Tomatoes has become increasingly essential to both pop-culture geeks and the general movie-going public, thanks in part to its simplicity.
