If you have your heart set on a Florida getaway this fall or winter, don't miss the chance to explore one of Florida's less-visited beach towns. While Orlando, Miami and Fort Lauderdale continue to be popular picks for snow birds, there are a few other destinations perfect for enjoying the warmer weather and a relaxing retreat. Plan a day trip to one of these coastal destinations when you're in Florida this season, or plan your entire trip right in one of these charming towns.
Here are five Florida beach towns to explore during the colder months:
Vero Beach
This historic coastal town offers a wealth of activities for outdoor enthusiasts, shoppers and travelers eager to explore the Treasure Coast. The small seaside town is home to several fine dining destinations, cultural attractions and miles of white sandy beaches. Head here to experience the slow-paced, Old Florida lifestyle and spend your days fishing, shopping, boating or visiting the botanical garden.
Pensacola Beach
Home to some of the whitest beaches in Florida, Pensacola Beach continues to be an attractive family-friendly vacation destination and offers plenty to enjoy during the winter months. Head to the Boardwalk to spend a few hours shopping and enjoy some live entertainment. Make your way further inland to enjoy a meal at a local pizzeria, sports bar or American grill. If you've visiting during December, you can catch the lighted boat parade in celebration of the holiday season.
Treasure Island
Famous for its spectacular sunsets and scenic setting, Treasure Island is the place to enjoy the laid-back Florida lifestyle and spend your days fishing, boating or just relaxing on the sands. The barrier island is located in western Florida, about a thirty-minute drive from downtown Tampa. Enjoy the views of both the Gulf of Mexico and the waters around Boca Ciega Bay during your trip.
Indian Rocks Beach
Another Gulf Coast beach town that's well-suited for relaxation and a carefree vacation is Indian Rocks Beach. Seafood fans can tuck in to some fresh seafood and local favorites at legendary restaurants along the coast. You'll also find some locally-owned pizza restaurants, Italian eateries and international dining destinations throughout the area. Spend an afternoon hiking through Indian Rocks Beach County Park or take a boat out on the Intracoastal Waterway.
Sanibel Island
Sanibel is another barrier island located off the west coast of Florida and a prime spot for bird watching, wildlife viewing and nature hikes. Make your way down the coastline to see the historic lighthouse, stroll down the boardwalk and explore some of the locally-owned shops and restaurants around the island. This Florida beach town is a popular destination for weddings and romantic getaways. It could be a great vacation destination for your winter retreat.
