2009: The Year in Indie Music Review

2009 marked a great year for albums in folk and indie music. Animal Collective issued the 5-song EP, Fall Be Kind. The Flaming Lips issued their tenth album, Embryonic, and Sunset Rubdown released their third album, Dragonslayer. 2009 also saw a slew of freshman albums from promising indie bands. Neon Indian, an impressive Austin-based talent, released Psychic Chasms. Real Estate, who started with several singles like "Black Lake," released their full length, self-titled album, and Cymbals Eat Guitars released, Why There Are Mountains.

2010: Upcoming Folk and Indie Music Albums Worth Waiting For

2010 promises to bring a whole host of new albums worth getting excited about. From rumors, like the Arcade Fire working on a third album, to confirmed release dates; January 12th for MGMT's sophomore album.

Beach House: Teen Dream

Beach house is an indie music duo (Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand) that formed in Baltimore, Maryland in 2004. Their freshman album's sound, a mix atmospheric rhythms and lyrics, was included on Pitchfork Media's best of 2006 list. The duo is releasing their third album, Teen Dream, on January 26, 2010. The cd comes with a DVD including music videos for every song on the cd.

Fleet Foxes: Title Unknown

Robin Pecknold and Skyler Skjelset formed what was then known as Pineapple in Seattle, Washington. In 2008, the band had changed its name to Fleet Foxes and was signed by Sub Pop. Fleet Foxes recorded an EP, Sun Giant, and a self-titled LP. Robin Pecknold told several music news sites that the band will be recording and releasing their second LP in the second half of 2010.

Vampire Weekend: Contra

Declared the "Best New Band" by Spin magazine, Vampire Weekend is an Indie band that formed in 2008. They released their self-titled debut album in January of 2008. Vampire Weekend's second alum, Contra, is set for release on January 12th. A single from Contra, "Horchata," is available as a free-download on the band's website.

MGMT: Congratulations

Formed by Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden, Vampire Weekend has had a successful run with their freshman indie music album, Oracular Spectacular. Rolling Stone called Oracular Spectacular one of the best albums of the decade. Vampire Weekend is set to release their sophomore album, Congratulations, in January.

Wolf Parade: Title Unknown

Wolf Parade was formed in 2004 in Montreal by Spencer Krug. The band's first full length LP, Apologies to the Queen Mary, was released in 2005 under the Sub Pop label. Their second album, At Mount Zoomer, was released in 2008, but didn't receive the success of the freshman album. In 2009 Spencer Krug told reporters that Wolf Parade would begin recording their third album in November of 2009, set to be released in the second half of 2010.

    Wolf Parade! Thank you for putting them on your list. I don't know if I would categorize them in the folk genre though. Apologies to the Queen was an indie masterpiece. If you like Wolf Parade then Krug's side project Sunset Rubdown might be right up your alley.
