Raw Meats
Raw meats should be avoided at all costs. All meats including beef and seafood, should be cooked well down. Raw seafood and meats can pose serious risks for bacteria which can be harmful. Avoid eating meats that are not well done and raw seafood in dishes such as sushi and ceviche.
Unpasteurized Dairy
Diary products such as soft cheeses, creams, and milk that have not been pasteurized should also be avoided during pregnancy. Unpasteurized dairy products can contain serious bacteria such as Campylobacter, Escherichia coli, Listeria, Salmonella and Yersinia. All of which can harm both the mother and the fetus. These serious condition may need to be treated with antibiotics which could be extremely harmful for the unborn fetus.
Raw Eggs
Raw eggs or foods containing raw eggs should be avoided during pregnancy. Regardless of protein benefits, raw eggs should not be consumed as part of any meal. In addition, raw eggs in foods such as cookie dough, cakes, and other dishes should be avoided until after the food has been fully cooked and the eggs are no longer considered to be raw. Simply tasting raw cookie dough or eating eggs 'sunny-side up' can pose serious health risks due to bacteria associated with raw eggs.
Sugary Foods
Sugary foods can be consumed in moderation but should not be indulged. Falling victim to extreme pregnancy cravings for sugary foods can pose serious risks associated with obesity and gestational diabetes. Maintain a safe weight by eating sugary foods only in moderation. Too many sugary foods can cause a spike in sugar levels which can lead to gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes can pose side effects for both the mother and fetus. Macrosomia being one of the most common risks of consuming sugary foods.
Foods that Contain High Levels of Mercury
Certain fish such as Tuna and Tile fish should be avoided during pregnancy. These fish contain high levels of Mercury which can lead to several birth defects including developmental delays. Speak with your OBGYN to discuss what he or she believes is a safe level of consumption. Some doctors will tell you eats OK to eat certain types of Mercury containing fish in moderation. However, depending on your pregnancy, current health conditions, and fetal status, it is best to speak with your doctor for his or her opinion on what is safe.
