5 Free Alternatives for Microsoft Word

Lee Andrew Henderson
Unfortunately some programs are expensive and Microsoft Office is no exception. Microsoft Office can cost as much as $140 and most people don't have a lot of money to spend right now. The most common use of Microsoft Office is for Microsoft Word and while Microsoft Office includes several programs if you're looking for an alternative for just Microsoft Word there are 5 alternatives that are free and are every bit as good as Word.

OpenOffice
OpenOffice is the word processor being used to type this very article and is the most popular Word alternative for PC users. The reason that OpenOffice is the best Microsoft Word alternative is that in addition to a word processor it also has a spreadsheet, presentation program and graphics program. The word processor in OpenOffice is almost an exact copy of Microsoft Word. Anybody that has used Microsoft Word in the past will know how to get their way around OpenOffice.

AbiWord
AbiWord is another alternative of Microsoft Word that is essentially a Microsoft Word clone. If you are looking for just a word processor then AbiWord is a great alternative for Microsoft Word but AbiWord is not as popular as OpenOffice is because it is only a word processor while OpenOffice has other abilities.

Google Docs
Google Docs is probably the second most popular Microsoft Word alternative after OpenOffice. Google Docs does not require downloading any software but instead it is an online word processor. The user must have a Gmail account and along with the account they will get Google Docs for free and free online space to save their documents.

Adobe Buzzword
Adobe Buzzword is another word processor that is completely online and a download is not required. When using Adobe Buzzword it looks like a desktop application but it actually operates like any website.

NeoOffice
NeoOffice is basically the OpenOffice of the Mac. It is the best Microsoft Word alternative for the Mac because it has all the same goodies that the Word does. NeoOffice comes with a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation program and graphics program.
