5 Free Online Office Tools

Laura Hickey
Online there are some useful and free tools to help with everything from word count to daily reminders of the day's to do list. Below are 5 websites that offer tools currently free of charge.

The solution cafe offers an free spell checker for the languages of English, Spanish, French, Italian and German. The website also includes a medical spell checker. A pop up blocker needs to be turned off or temporarily allow pop ups from the website for the spell checker to be able to work. When spell checking an article, it looks over internet addresses and e-mail addresses. The website is pretty basic looking without much color but does its job. Check it out for yourself at : http://www.thesolutioncafe.com/public-spell-checker.html

Spell Check is another plain looking website that spells checks your work up to 20,000 characters. Along with spell checking the website offers word count and character count. Great to use when filling out your Associated Content article description. You can choose to ignore upper case, lower case or proper case words.

This spell checker doesn't require a pop up blocker to be turned off but rather checks the words and enters them in the same area where you pasted the work to be checked. Click on all the words needed to be fixed on the drop down line to pick the word that is correct. Afterwards click on the 'apply changes' button and you're done. http://www.spellcheck.net/

Word Count Tool isn't a colorful art filled website. It's a simple orange box that the text is put into and then the 'submit' button is clicked but its fast. It's one of the fastest word count tools I've come across. The counter doesn't count numbers alone, HTML tags or words with a hyphen or apostrophe. It's a good tool when perhaps your Microsoft Office free trial has ended and you haven't purchased the software. Or you might be using a friend's computer who owns a printer and you need to check if your work has enough words for an essay or document. http://www.wordcounttool.com/

If you have room on your computer to download 142mb for Windows operating system, Open Office may be the program for you. Open Office is a currently free to use word processor, database, spreadsheet software. You can download to as many PCS as you want. It's good for use in education, office and at home use. Students of all ages can find use for this software from everything to writing a paper to using the graphics drawing features. A nice feature is having a file from different software being able to read the file without having to copy and paste the contents into Open Office. This software offers many languages in many different OS's, anything from English, Italian and even Turkish along with many more. You can download it from the official website, P2P or if you have a slow connection to the Internet a CD.

The CDs do not come directly from Open Office but rather from a distributor who charges a fee to cover their costs and the postage. The distributor requires you to agree to the price before they will ship out the CD and you must stay in contact via e-mail until your item has arrived. On the Open Office's official website you can also view information about news, new releases of the software and also snapshots to get an idea of the program. Many parts of the program are very similar to that of other office software making this easy to use. http://www.openoffice.org

Are you a fan of the little yellow Post It notes around your home or office? How about having Post It notes on your computer's desktop for reminders for free? You can with Post It Software Notes Lite version. This software is basic with allowing you to post notes whatever text color you choose with Internet links and pictures. Keep in mind that currently the note pad is only the color yellow. You can even add alarms to go off to remind you to read a specific note. You aren't limited to only the size of the regular post it note either. It's an easy way to clean up any Post It notes that might have been cluttering up your work space. Currently you can't take back notes that have been throw into the recycle bin. The current download size is 185 MBs and is for operating systems: Windows 98, Me, NT, 2000 and XP. You can download it here via download.com direct: http://www.download.com/Post-it-Software-Notes-Lite/3000-2351_4-10060027.html

It's a good idea with all downloads to test for spyware and or any viruses. A product may claim it's been tested for safety concerning these issues but it's always a good idea to double check before using the program. Another good idea is to read others opinions before downloading to view if others had any computer complications after downloading the item.
