5 Free Podcasts to Improve Your Singing Voice

Jolynne M Hudnell
As a part-time amateur singer I don't have the time or finances for personal vocal lessons. Since I sing weekly as a part of a choir and am given the opportunity to perform solos as well, I like to find ways to improve vocal quality and technique on my own. Following are five podcasts for improving singing voice.

It is difficult to find free podcasts that pertain to singing voice. Most sites that come up in a search simply have articles and some have videos, so your "practice" times are limited to when you can view them. Although video is important in improving some vocal techniques, podcasts can be downloaded to an mp3 player or even your cell phone and taken with you on-the-go.

I chose the following podcasts because they are free and are helpful in improving singing voice. There are many podcasts you can purchase on improving vocal quality and technique, including many on amazon.com and iTunes for as little as a dollar each.

Voice Lessons to Go. Ariella Vaccarino offers great tips on improving the quality of your own singing voice. Though many of her tips are for beginning singers, these tips can be applied to any level singer. I really like how she places emphasis on your own personal sound and the importance of not trying so hard to imitate the sound of others. This lesson is all about making your own singing voice the most beautiful it can be.

Vocal Health Tips. As I sing nearly every week I am always concerned about taking care of my voice. In a podcast provided by Berklee Shares, Anne Peckham discusses many factors that can affect your vocal chords. One surprising factor I learned is that my speaking voice actually affects the quality of my singing voice. My theater training on speaking voice during my school years goes against what I need to be doing now to protect my singing voice, as I speak much lower on a daily basis than I should be to protect my vocal chords.

John Henry Vocals. John Henry offers several free podcasts on improving your singing voice. The one that interests me the most is one on vibrato. Vibrato is that amazing wavering sound that you can hear when a singer holds out a note. This effect was discouraged in my vocal training in school. Since returning to singing the last few years I've found that my voice has actually developed vibrato naturally, so I am more curious about this and John Henry explains it well. He also offers very useful podcasts on issues such as strength and transitions between lower and higher register, the head voice.

Voice Training Studio Podcast. Daniel E. Hayes and Kim Snyder give tips on many areas of vocal improvement. Episode number 3 talks about how to get more power in your voice and why you should not try to get more sound by forcing the diaphragm. Episode 4 discusses ways to overcome excuses as to why your singing voice may not be at its best. There are a couple other podcasts available in this series that are helpful as well. For example, on connecting emotionally with your song. This is especially important for me, as my Christmas solo next is a song from Mary's perspective. You need iTunes to listen to these podcasts.

The Explore Your Voice Show Podcast. Although these podcasts mostly pertain to recording, there are several that are useful to improve your singing voice. There are several podcasts about performance and putting feeling into songs. Several of the longer podcasts give more than one tip on improving vocal quality and these can work together to get the results you want. You need iTunes for this series.

Podcasts for Improving Singing Voice. Those mentioned above are free podcasts that I have found to be helpful in improving my vocal quality and technique. There are many free videos available on places such as YouTube. There are also podcasts available for purchase, many for as low as a dollar on both amazon.com and iTunes. You may decide to invest in a few podcasts that address you specific issues as you enjoy the convenience of podcasts for improving singing voice.
