5 Fun Farm Books for Toddlers and Early Readers

Wendy Brock
Toddlers love learning about farm animals and these fun books are a great way to introduce them to farm life. Whether you're introducing a child to beginning books on reading or teaching a unit lesson with a farm theme, these books are great for introducing consonant sounds, animal sounds, and early speech and reading.

The following three books are wonderful for toddlers. Each book is short with few words per page and has colorful illustrations. Young children will love having these books in their library and will love having you read to them over and over again.

The Very Happy Hen written and illustrated by Jack Tickle is a pop up book that will have your kids squealing with excitement as you turn each page. With one animal per page and a rhyme about the animal, your child will learn about farm animals as they explore this interactive book. Eight different animals seem to come to life in this colorful book.

Pop-Up Farm written and illustrated by Richard Deverell is another pop up book about farm animals that your child will love. With ten different animals and a rhyme on each page, your child will learn about the names of animals with this colorful and fun book.

My Farm Friends from Brimax Books and illustrated by Mike and Ann Ricketts is a four page book that has few words and teaches counting. This book is great for children with short attention spans. Each page has counting games for different animals. The illustrations use soft colors and teach how to distinguish baby and parent animals from each other.

The next two books, along with being great for young readers, are also perfect for speech therapists working with kids who have speech disorders. The writing styles of both book encourages readers or listeners to pronounce common sounds while having fun reading these cute stories. These two books are great for early readers of any age.

Cows Can't Fly written and illustrated by David Milgrim is a hilarious story about one boy's imagination about flying cows. While no one seems to pay attention to him or the cows in the sky, the little boy sees flying cows everywhere. This short book encourages creativity and the fully illustrated pages keep the readers' attention. Your kids will beg you to read this over and over.

Big Tractor by Kay Barnes and illustrated by Andrew Everitt-Stewart is a giant book shaped like a tractor. Using words like "Vrummm Vrummm" and "Chugga Chugga," it encourages kids to discover sounds while learning about the jobs a tractor performs on a farm. It's only five pages, but is a wonderful addition to a teacher's collection.

Whether your kids are learning about a farm unit or they really want to learn more about animals that live on a farm, these are some great books to read. Your child will gain a sense of farm life, the sounds that animals make, and the types of jobs that people do on farms.
