Color Theme
Tired of walking through the motions of exchanging gifts? Try adding a color theme. Tell each person participating in the gift exchange that their gift must be a certain color. Off the wall colors such as orange are great. There will always be one person who gives up trying to find something appropriate and just wraps a bag of oranges, and it's fun to see the recipient of that prize open their gift. One warning - shopping for these theme gifts can be frustrating.
Gift Card Theme
Gift cards are becoming more and more popular holiday gifts. Why fret over buying the perfect gift when you can let the recipient choose their own. Simply set a price, and then buy a gift card for that amount to exchange. Try to match the merchant to your recipient's personality. This is a great gift exchange idea for those groups that don't know each other well personally, and therefore gift selection is difficult.
White Elephant Theme
There is nothing more fun than a white elephant gift exchange. Simply sort through those old boxes in the basement and attic, and find the ugliest, craziest, most hideous item you can find. There's your gift! This type of gift exchange is great for close friends who want to do something for the holidays but don't want to spend a lot of cash. After all, the holidays can definitely be a financial drain. This gift exchange is sure to be filled with laughs as the participants open their oddball gifts and the givers explain their choice or the history behind the item.
Ornament Theme
This is a great theme for young families that are building a Christmas ornament collection. Set a price range and then ask each participant to purchase a Christmas tree ornament to exchange. Try to keep your selection traditional to match most decors.
Holiday Candle Theme
Candles are always a holiday favorite. Who doesn't want to fill their house with holiday scents such as pine, gingerbread, cinnamon, and cookies during the Christmas season? Holiday candles are also great for decorating and centerpieces. Set a price limit and ask each participant to bring a holiday themed scented candle for the gift exchange.
