5 Fun Places to Take Kids in Ashland, Oregon
Neighborhood: Ashland

Just about 14 miles past the California border, Ashland is nestled in the Rogue Valley. This charming little city is home to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, numerous stores and art galleries. Not everything in town is directed at grown-ups, Ashland is a wonderful place to bring kids. Here are some places you can explore with kids of any age.

Lithia Park-- What is often referred to as the "crown jewel" of our city, Lithia Park was designed in 1892 and consists of about 93 acres of wonderland. Visitors can stroll along many pathways past two duck ponds (watch for turtles and sometimes even little fish-- if you are really lucky you might even spot a blue heron), through a magical Japanese Garden, view a historic fountain and so much more. Keep an eye out for trolls, my children say they see them sometimes. One of our family traditions is to be sure to stomp three times before crossing any of the foot bridges. If everything seems quiet, it is safe to pass. Lithia Park is a place where your imagination can play.

Main Bulletin Board-- Middle of the Ashland Plaza. Okay, I know this isn't a "place" where your kids can unwind, but since there is always something new going on around town, checking out the main bulletin board is a must! You'll learn about classes, live music offerings, plays and more than I can list here. Ashland is a college town and one of the best aspects of that is that we enjoy a constant turnover of new cultural experiences. This is where tourists can find out about what's new and gain some ideas of things to do while you are here.

Garfield Park-- Garfield park lies between Garfield and California Streets and features fun play structures, volleyball nets, basketball courts and a fun water play park. The water park is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, and it is free. In the summer months this is a popular place and you'll see many families having picnics, birthday parties or just spending some time together. The park faces part of East Main Street, but all of the play spaces are far from the road, so it is a safe place.

Movies-- The Varsity Theater is located downtown. You'll find independent films are shown here. Across town is the Coming Attractions Theatre on Ashland Street where you can catch whatever new hyped up film is a "must see". Both theaters are well maintained and family friendly places.

Walk around Downtown-- Put on your walking shoes and go explore the many shops, art galleries and eateries downtown. You can get ice cream, explore all of the bookstores and look for something special to take back home with you. Our downtown merchants support many local artists, so watch for items that are locally made. Or just hang on to your cash and window shop, but you'll probably still have to bribe the kids with the ice cream to keep it fun.

Whatever you decide to do while you are visiting Ashland, we hope that you have a lovely time (and your kids do too!)

I tend to shy away from trying to describe myself in 255 characters or less because I like to think that the sum of who I am is much more indescribable. But here goes! My favorite color is purple, I am ma...  View profile
