5 Fun and Unusual October Holidays I Will Be Celebrating

Rebecca Bardelli
October holds many fun and unusual holidays. There are five October holidays I don't want to miss, and you may not want to either.

Here they are in order of occurrence:

Oct. 2 is Name Your Car Day

If your car doesn't have a name yet, Oct. 2 is a good day to name it. Name Your Car Day gives us all an excuse to name our cars. My car doesn't have a name yet and I am considering the names Lady Silver and Lady Dreamer. I am considering Lady Silver because my car is silver. Lady Dreamer is a consideration because I am a dreamer. What will you name your car as you celebrate Name Your Car Day? Another idea when naming your car is to name it after a food. If you have a yellow car, you could name her Lady Lemon. Those who have a red car may consider naming her Cabernet after the wine.

Oct. 12 is International Moment of Frustration Scream Day

I am loving the sound of this holiday. Who doesn't want an excuse to scream out of frustration? I certainly do. We all have plenty of frustrations in our life and could use a good scream at least once a year. I'll be screaming on International Moment of Frustration Scream Day, so be listening for my echo.

International Moment of Frustration Scream Day was created by Thomas and Ruth Roy. The plan is to go outdoors at twelve hundred hours Greenwich (England) time and scream for a full 30 seconds. For those of us on the East Coast, we should be screaming at 8 in the morning. You may want to warn your neighbors first, so they don't call the cops! Having a coffee and doughnut social with neighbors can add to the fun. Hold a count down to scream all at one time.

Oct. 20 is National Brandied Fruit Day

What could be wrong with National Brandied Fruit Day? With the words brandy and fruit, need I say more? To make brandied fruit you need fresh fruit, sugar and brandy. Let your cut fruit bathe in a sweet sugar and brandy mixture. Some set their brandied fruit on fire by pouring brandy over top and setting it into flames. Please be careful when handling alcohol near flames and don't do so by yourself.

Oct. 28 is National Chocolate Day

You heard right, Oct. 28 is National Chocolate Day. If you have been craving chocolate, you have every reason to tantalize your taste buds on this very special holiday. Celebrate National Chocolate Day be eating chocolate, watching a movie such as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and learning the history of chocolate.

Here are a few fun facts:

  • Chocolate comes from the Theobroma cacao L. tree and was given the name theobroma by the Swedish naturalist, Linnaeus. Theobroma means "food of the gods" and is taken from the Greek language.
  • Chocolate has long been called an aphrodisiac.
  • Among the post-Classic Maya and Aztecs, cacao was an elite drink and used as money.

Oct. 30 is National Candy Corn Day

Candy corn is one of my favorite Halloween candies, so I will most assuredly be celebrating this holiday. Celebrate National Candy Corn Day by learning more about candy corn and by reading my short and sweet candy corn haiku poem.

Happy October and don't forget that Halloween is Oct. 31. You know how to celebrate Halloween already. Celebrate Halloween with costumes, candy and Jack-O-Lanterns.
