5 Funny Halloween Costumes for Plus-Sized Men

Pandi Panda
Getting dressed and looking good are tasks that are sometimes difficult for plus-sized men. Often clothes with an appropriate fit are hard to find and it is sometimes difficult to select a style that will suit a large frame in a dignified manner. Finding a Halloween costume is no exception to this ordeal. It is a time when great attention will be lavished upon your physical appearance so it is important to both look good and feel confident about your external appearance.

When selecting a costume for a plus-sized man it is imperative to remember to work with your body rather than against it. I would suggest choosing a costume that plays on your more bountiful nature rather than one that (unsuccessfully) hides it. Doing so will make people admire your sense of humour and the confidence it requires to pull such a look off.

Below are 5 Halloween costume ideas that are ideal for plus-sized men.

#1 Rubeus Hagrid

This gentle giant often acts as Harry Potter's mentor and friend, through out the series. He is instantly recognized by all children and most adults and if you wear the costume around teenage girls expect to be hugged incessantly.

To assemble: Obtain a large brown robe. Wear. Obtain a large wig and fake beard, prefer a large, tangled, wild-looking wig and beard. Normally I would suggest growing the beard and hair, but to do Hagrid justice, this process would really take several months and is therefore not practical unless you are planning very far ahead.

#2 The Buddha

This costume works particularly well if you are someone of Asian descent. It is both humorous and almost universally recognized. Further this is a costume that is much better when pulled off by someone with chubbier leanings.

To assemble: Simply shave your head and most of your body hair above the waist. Put on a pair of bright orange pajama pants (no shirt). Done! You may further accessorize with beads, a necklace, an ohm symbol on the forehead, or giant plug earrings. But these are totally optional.

#3 A pregnant nun (or other female)

Okay, I admit this one is a little crass, but if you are someone with a particularly distinct beer belly this costume works pretty well.

To assemble: Buy a black robe and nun habit. Don, done.

#4 Santa Claus

While not exactly seasonal, this is another costume that works well for plus-sized guys. This is another costume that will make people hug you and want to take pictures with you.

To assemble: For this costume it would probably be easiest to buy the outfit from a costume shop (most costume shops will carry Santa Claus outfits), although you may accessorize with a sack and bell from home.

#5 André the Giant

This costume is included here in honor of the beloved wrestler and Princess Bride star. This costume is especially wonderful because it provides big men with one of the only opportunities they will have (other than pro wrestling) to wear a spandex leotard and still be socially acceptable.

To assemble: Buy a black leotard. Cut off one shoulder and a little bit of the surrounding material (to give it André's signature "caveman" look. Don't style your hair for a few days, put on your leotard, and a pair of black boots, and you're ready to go!
