When choosing a film to share with your significant other, the best path to take is right down the middle. The following five movies are ones that work very well for my husband and me because each one has something for both of us. If you are looking for a film to share either with your long-term significant other or with a new love interest, any of these films would be excellent choices.
Jerry Maguire
Jerry Maguire has to be one of the best 'date movies' ever. It has something for both sexes. Men enjoy watching the football and Renee Zellwegger, while the women get a touching love story and Tom Cruise. The movie works great as either a first date movie, because it is sweet and funny with some sports action, or an inspiring tale for more established relationships, because it provides ideas on what is important in a relationship and how to keep it healthy. The film also incorporates comedy into the story line to keep viewers attention throughout. If nothing else, you also get to witness one of the most romantic speeches given by a man in a movie; "You complete me."
Hitch
Will Smith plays a relationship master who teaches men how to win the girl of their dreams, but when he falls for the gorgeous Eva Mendes, he becomes less than a smooth operator. The movie is quite funny as you watch Smith fumble and bumble his way into the girl's heart. The flick is perfect as a date movie because what man can resist the beautiful Ms. Mendes, plus there are sports scenes and tips on getting girls, while the women get to have their love story need fulfilled.
Stranger Than Fiction
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this movie when I first watched it. The previews did not do it justice. Stranger Than Fiction is a very sweet, honest, funny, and romantic film. Will Ferrell plays Harold Crick who is a very by the books, borderline OCD, auditor for the IRS who falls for Ana Pascal (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who is a vibrant, energetic, buck the system, owner of a bakery. The story follows Harold as he 'hears' his life being narrated, including every single move, until the narrator announces that Harold will die. You get to see Harold break out of his shell and experience life in a way he never would have done before. The love story is very sweet and honest and Ferrell creates a character that everyone can relate to. It is just a feel good story that everyone can enjoy.
The Princess Bride
This movie has become a classic love story of modern movies. The best thing about this story, though, is its quirkiness. It is not a straight love story between Buttercup and Westley; you also get Vizzini and his circular riddles, Inigo Montoya and his search for the killer of his father, Fezzik the giant wrestler who has a soft spot for love, and finally Billie Crystal playing Miracle Max, who brings Westley back to life. The sword fights and the off-the-wall jokes, added to the sweet love story between Buttercup and Westley, has made this movie ever-lasting, and a great pick for a date movie that both people will enjoy.
Mr. And Mrs. Smith
Mr. and Mrs. Smith is packed full of action and emotion and passion. The men will love all of the fight scenes, along with the non-stop action, topped off with a very sexy Angelina Jolie. Yet, the women have Brad Pitt to enjoy, as well as the passionately uncontrolled, house destroying, electric battle/love scene. You almost feel as exhausted as Pitt and Jolie after watching it. Ultimately, this film will certainly get your blood flowing.
Hopefully these movies help make date night more enjoyable and something to look forward to for both sides.
