There haven't always been over-the-counter or prescription pills to pop the minute we feel sick. Instead, for many centuries herbs have been used medicinally to treat a variety of different ailments. Growing your own medicinal herb garden is not only fun, but it can provide you with herbs that will help you to feel better. Whether you need to relieve a headache, sleep better, ease an upset stomach or find relief for any number of other ailments, here are 6 great herbs for a medicinal herb garden.

Nettles

Nettles are an excellent source of iron and can be helpful with anemia. Taken during menstruation they can help to replenish iron in your body and give you more energy. They may also give you healthier, clearer skin and are sometimes used as a remedy for eczema. Use caution around the plants to avoid getting stung by them.

Peppermint

Peppermint is most notably used to help with upset stomachs. It also has been shown to relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Some other people use peppermint to treat headaches, indigestion, respiratory problems, and dandruff. Along with its medicinal uses, peppermint can be used for so many other things that it is a good addition for any herb garden.

Calendula

You probably know calendula by its more common name - the marigold. These common, pretty flowers have a lot more benefits than just looking good. Calendula flowers have been used throughout history for a number of different medicinal purposes. Some of the most common are to reduce inflammation, as an antiseptic against infection, and to treat skin problems such as eczema.
