5 Great Science Fiction Mini-Series Recommendations

All Available for Instant Online Viewing or on DVD

I've watched so many television series on DVD that I've gotten spoiled. Now, I can't stand watching shows the traditional way - on television. The obnoxious commercials, hassle of recording and whatnot just seem archaic. I love the convenience of watching as many or few episodes as I like, whenever I want, without interruptions.

There are times when a short, entire series is convenient and appealing. It's quite longer and more engaging than even the longest epic films, yet compartmentalized enough (because of the individual 45- minute episodes) to put away without compromising the flow of the story.

Whether you're going to be taking a road trip, (as a passenger, of course) find yourself under the weather, or are just in the mood for some great television short series, below are some recommendations that will satisfy. All listed are only one season, or partial seasons (because of cancellation) or mini-series.

They are available on DVD, from Netflix Instant Viewing, or from Hulu, as indicated. Netflix now offers free unlimited viewing to account holders, and Hulu is free (and nicely with short, and limited commercial interruptions) and available entirely online, without an account-just click and watch.

Jekyll
6 episodes--available as instant view at Netflix, and on DVD.

My sister recommended this to me in an email with a subject line that read "Best Series Ever." The email stated "Run, don't walk, to watch Jekyll." I did just that. I was hooked from the first scene. Actually, everyone I know that has watched it has said the same thing: it is one of the best sci-fi series ever, well-acted, properly creepy, intriguing, and suspenseful. It's that good-really.

For those who may roll their eyes at the thought of a modern-day retelling of the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story-good news. Although it does incorporate the same themes of dual personalities, there's so much more. Run, don't walk.

Journeyman
13 episodes--all available at Hulu

Although most cancelled series have fans wailing, this is one that in-arguably deserves such protest. It's one of those rare shows that seemed to appear fully formed, comfortable in its own skin. The characters are well developed, even complex. It has one of the best opening credits and songs in recent tv show memory, as well.

Time travel escapades and paradoxes, heroes and heroines, lost loves, a newspaper sub-plot-this show has these and so much more. It's just a cryin' shame there are only 13 episodes.

New Amsterdam
8 episodes--all episodes available at hulu

The previews of this show seemed to start a year before it was ever shown, and once it was actually on the air, I'd rather forgotten all about it. It seemed appealing-the clips reminded me a bit of everything I loved about the original Highlander movie; a youngish man, living in a modern city, but belong to ancient times. I love any fiction or mythology that has to do with immortality, so I was eager to watch it.

Luckily, there's Hulu. I watched all the episodes, and it's a good sci-fi detective series worth the time. Not on par with Journeyman as it stands, but I am certain it would have ripened well with age. Would that it were.

The Lost Room
6 episodes--Available on DVD

This series rivals Jekyll for best sci-fi mini-series ever. It's like an impossible, exalted mix of Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock, Sherlock Holmes, CSI, a really complicated jigsaw puzzle, and...other great stuff.

Enchanted, lost objects, a most otherworldly motel room that exists outside space and time, and some desperate detective work are at the heart of this series. Simply excellent.

Dresden Files
12 episodes-all available at Hulu and Sci fi

Perhaps more along the lines of fantasy than strict science fiction, Dresden Files incorporates magic (wizards, old spirits, spells, amulets, the paranormal, etc.--you get the idea) into its hero's private detective storyline.

This series is developing a cult-like status, like the Jim Butcher's books the series is based on, so you'd better start watching so you're not missing out on all the coolness.

v is a great one too, Todd, you're right. I will probably write another article about older short sci fi series--I wish V was viewable online.

The Lost Room sounds worth checking out, thanks. Can't believe the series 'V' didn't make the cut.
