5 Habits to Maintain Healthy Eyesight

Lori Piper
Are you a four eyes? I am. Have been since the tender age of seven. Are you one of the lucky ones, who have been able to literally read fine print anywhere without any assistance? Can you really see that street sign from five blocks away? Will your eyes automatically become progressively worse? For some, yes, it is heredity. Eyesight worsens with age. Eventually most everyone will experience some vision loss, as we grow older. However, for the most of us, we can maintain the eyesight that we have with five healthy habits.

Habits to maintain healthy eyesight- sunglasses do not just belong in Hollywood

Wear them. Damage done to eyes by sunlight is cumulative. It will worsen over time- stop it. Don a pair of shades. Chose ultra cool or geeky - your choice. Have a pair for each season or to match your accessories. Nevertheless, do opt for a pair that you will wear outdoors. Sunlight exposure has been linked to eye disorders such as macular degeneration, cataracts, and corneal degeneration.

Habits to maintain healthy eyesight- the proverbial carrot is not alone

Vitamin A is essential to protecting our eyesight. Carrots are not the only source of Vitamin A. Spinach, cantaloupe, and milk are also sources. The slogan was not wrong about milk doing a body good-and eyes are a part of our body. In addition, Popeye was not just strong.

Habits to maintain healthy eyesight- be quick: the rabbit not the hare

If you notice any change in your vision, make an appointment to see your optometrist immediately. Treatment mat be able to correct or slow down, or even stop vision impairment. Spots in the eye, flashes of light, blurriness- be safe, not sorry and quickly call your doctor.

Habits to maintain healthy eyesight- how long has it been?

When is the last time you have had your eyes checked? Two years should be the longest, no more than three. Ideally, have a check up every eighteen months. Glaucoma could be affecting your optic nerve: the longer it is left untreated; the less chance there is to prevent vision loss. The earlier glaucoma is caught, the better opportunity exists to control vision loss.

Habits to maintain healthy eyesight- squinty mcginty

Being a four eyes is not the end of the world. Get your eyes checked and wear prescription glasses or contacts. Your eyes will not become weaker with the wearing of corrective lenses. Moreover, you will be amazed at how the world around you looks. Additionally, squinting is not only unattractive, but it can cause wrinkles.

With everything else that comes along with becoming older, do not miss out on witnessing your younger sister go through "the aging process" as you did. Keep these five habits in mind.

Four eyes here since grammar school. I have worn contacts(hard and soft), but prefer glasses because I got an infection once wearing contacts. Great article!

Squinty McGinty? That's hilarious. And that's me - after decades of writing and editing. Yes, I wear my sunglasses on cloudy days too! ;-)

Great info! Yes, sunlight can hurt your eyes. My left eye was damaged by looking at an eclipse of the sun in the sixth grade. Guess I should have listened to the teachers.

This is great information. I'm a squinter. I just can't keep up with my glasses. The last time I lost them, my kids found them outside partially chewed up by the beloved beagles!
