5 Horror Movies that Will Keep You on the Edge of Your Seat

Bloddy, Scary and Greusome

Samantha Jean Lincoln
What makes a good horror? Well the best ones will have lots of demented psychopaths, cannibals, demons and a whole lot of gore. Some of the best horror films were made back in the 1970's, but Hollywood lacked the technology to make the movie jump out at you and seem like it was really happening. Recently some of the greatest horror classics have been remade and are twice as scary now than they were in the 1970's. Below is a list of my top 5 horror movies in the last decade; mind you these are my personal picks and why I think they make the grade.

Hostel

This incredible horror was written, produced and directed by Eli Roth. The movie was released in 2005 and was a huge success. This movie is based on a group of young adults who are traveling Europe and are convinced by a young man they met to follow him to a small town to party. When they get there they start to disappear and end up in a room tied to a chair to find a sadistic killer waiting to mutilate them. This movie made my list because of the gruesome nature of the killings along with the psychopathic nature of the killers who pay top dollar to commit these murders and then get away with it. The movie touches a real subject and that is, human trafficking. 100,000 Americans disappear each year and another 200,000 disappear around the world without a trace. Horrific scare!

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

This movie was originally filmed in 1974 and was inspired by "true events". The movie was released in 2003 staring Jessica Beal and right from the beginning it was a thriller that turned into a catastrophic event for the four young adults traveling home from Mexico. This movie made my list mostly because it was based on true events that occurred back in the early 1960's, the scariest part is that "Leather Face" has never been captured or found. Terrifying scare!

The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

This 2006 horror is a remake of the classic "Hills Have Eyes" that was filmed in 1977 by Wes Craven. In the remake (2006) movie it starts out with a team of government scientist with Geiger readers are investigating reports of radiation at a sight where the government used to conduct nuclear tests. The team is startled when a man appears asking for help, then all of the men are slaughtered and tied to the back of a truck and drug off. The mutated freaks then set their eyes on a passing family in an RV; they disable their vehicle and begin their rein of terror. This movie made my list purely because of its gruesome nature and ongoing action. Once you think you have seen it all, something else emerges to scare the crap out of you. Good scare, but more gruesome!

The Descent (2005)

Is a British horror that was written and directed by Neil Marshall. This is an original film and one of the best that I have seen in a long time. The movie does start out slow, but it is for you to understand the story. About 30 to 40 minutes into the movie the pace really picks up and you should be prepared to scream and fly right out of your seat! The movie follows a group of friends that head out for a caving expedition, but the expedition suddenly goes wrong when a rock slide collapses and traps them in the cave. A tribe of humanoid sub dwelling creatures emerge and start attacking the women as they struggle to survive and make it out of the cave alive. This movie is at the top of my list! I have never really screamed at a horror film until this one. The scare factor is incredible, it will have your heart racing and you will defiantly be on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend you see this film. Heart pounding scary!

Strangers (2008)

This movie is an American made horror-thriller. The marketing for this movie suggests that it is based on a true story, when actually it was a marketing ploy to sell more tickets. Given that, this movie still makes my list due to the sadistic nature of the villains. The movie is centered on a young couple that just happened to be home when the villains were looking for their next targets. This movie makes my list because of the scary nature of it. Imagine that you are at home, alone and someone starts pounding on your door, then on the windows, then they set your car on fire, then they break in to kill you and when asked why? They simply say, "Because you were home". Sick scary!
