5 Inexpensive Fun Family Outings in Charlotte

Cheryl Williams

Two of the most dreaded words that parents hear from their children are "I'm bored." Unfortunately, summer is usually the time when these words are most often spoken. After the summer camps and the family vacation is over with, kids can often get restless. The days are often too hot to spend outside. Therefore, it is important for parents to give the kids little things to look forward to during the week. Here are some fun things to do in Charlotte that won't break your budget:

Summer Movie Express. Several theatres in the Charlotte area offer movies during the summer months that are either free or $1. This is a perfect way to beat the summer heat. Some of the participating theatres include Stonecrest, Arboretum, and Franklin Square. There are also monthly movies in Freedom Park, and free popcorn is available. Participating in the Summer Movie Express was always something that my children and I enjoyed doing when they were younger.

Free Live Music. If you're looking for something fun and inexpensive to do on Saturday nights, why not check out the free family concerts at Providence Promendade and Blakeney shopping centers? They are family friendly, and the atmosphere is relaxed and fun. There is great live music to entertain you. Bring your lawn chairs, coolers, and enjoy!

Movies 10 Cinemark. This theatre is a great place to go if you want to take in a movie and pay $2 or less. Unlike the Summer Movie Express, Movies 10 Cinemark movies are available every day and night. They have a variety of movies, rated anywhere from PG to R. The movies come here after their first run status at the other major theatres has run its course. This used to be the only theatre my family went to. It gave us the opportunity to get out to a movie without breaking our budget.

Take a ride on the Lynx. Kids will love taking a ride on Charlotte's light rail system. Not only can you take a ride, you can hop off at some of the stops and do a bit of exploring. Have lunch or take the Lynx all the way to uptown. Kids will have a ball just exploring some of the sights around uptown Charlotte. Stop and have an ice cream, or buy something from one of the vendors.

Go to the dog park. If you own a dog, take a trip to one of the Charlotte area dog parks. They are a lot of fun for the entire family. Not only will your dog enjoy being around other animals, and having the freedom to run free for awhile, you and your family will enjoy watching and interacting with the other animals and their owners. The first time I took my Siberian Husky to Davie Dog Park, I was sold. It was a great experience for everyone.

Take advantage of all of that is available in the Charlotte area. It's a great place to have fun with your family!
