5 Killer Animal Movies from the Past

Shirley Norling
If you're a movie buff that enjoys the thrill of watching horror movies that maybe make you want to cover your eyes when that killer animal is about to devour some young innocent individual, then you may be familiar with some of these older more uncommon horror flicks. However if you belong to the younger generation you may have never heard of some of these animal killer movies from the 60's, 70's and 80's, most of them before the "Jaws" era. Here is a list of some of those nail-biter animal killer movies that may have made your parents or grandparents cringe in their seats at the movie theater a decade or two or three ago.

1. Night of the Grizzly-1966: Big Jim Cole inherits land in Wyoming and trades his lawman career in for a life as a rancher. He barely gets settled when new dangers are about to plague him. A treacherous grizzly bear nicknamed "Satan" keeps killing Cole's livestock. Besides Satan being on a murderous rampage, Cole's angry neighbors try to covet his property and an outlaw Big Jim once sent to prison shows up to make life even more miserable for Cole and his family. There's lots of action when Big Jim Cole battles the 18 ft. towering furious grizzly bear. I would classify this movie as a Western with killer animal drama.

2. Night of Lepus-1972: This is the story of a town with a "giant" animal problem. Giant killer rabbits, a by product of science gone wrong, futuristically enough, in a large scale sexual orientation-switching experiment meant to stop their constant breeding. They hop around and gnaw angrily at everything that crosses their bunny trail, these "unadorable" creatures. The tag-line for this type of movie poster could probably read "How many carrots can terror eat or how fluffy is impending death?"

3. The Uncanny-1977: This animal killer movie is described as a British entry about hissing cats. Its feature is a 3-part narrative about feline evil. The 1st part involves the murder of a cat-loving old woman who gives her entire fortune in her will to her cats. Not everyone is happy about the will but they must get past the cats to get to the will. The second part is a tale of black magic between 2 girls and the 3rd story is about a tale of murderous revenge by a cat.

4. The White Buffalo-1977: Charles Bronson stars as Wild Bill Hickok, a man tormented by reoccurring nightmares of a savage albino beast. Wild Bill sets across dusty ghost towns and deserted landscapes in search of the beast, teaming up along the way with Crazy Horse, who confirms Wild Bills fears. The buffalo actually exists and is a murderous beast. It makes one realize that sometimes it doesn't matter if it's just in your head or not. In the end, it'll still get you.

5. The Alligator-1980: Parents flush their children's pet alligator down the toilet, only to have it grow to full-size in a sewer by eating corpse of lab animals. When it's disturbed by sudden activity it emerges from underground and rampages through the city and attacks and kills people. Ramon the alligator is eventually blown to smithereens by a bomb. This is truly a very "gory" animal killer horror movie.
