5 Labor Day Travel Tips

Labor Day Travel Can Be Fun and Safe

Kristy Martz
Travel can be stressful enough without throwing in the many other Labor Day travelers. Whether you are traveling to the next town for your family's Labor Day reunion or you are going to travel to another state for Labor Day, these travel tips will help.

Plan for Labor Day Travel

Plan ahead. Print off any maps you need. Even if you are using a navigation system for the Labor Day travels, it is a good idea to have hard copies just in case. Put thought into where you will stop for breaks as you travel. Leave early in the morning to avoid peak traffic. Some people prefer to leave late at night instead, but you run the risk of being too exhausted to drive.

Labor Day Travel Safety

Always lock your car doors when you stop, even if you are just running into the rest stop bathroom for a minute. Only stop in well-lit areas where there are many other people. Labor Day travel is common, so you will run into a lot more traffic than normal. Remember not to tailgate other drivers or road rage if someone cuts you off. Always stop and rest if you feel tired.

Labor Day Travel Food

Bring snacks from home in order to save money during your Labor Day travels. Pack a cooler with sandwiches and drinks so you won't be tempted to stop for fast food. Not only is fast food fattening, but it's expensive!

Labor Day Travel Tips for Dealing with Other Drivers

There will be many others out there on their own Labor Day travels. Prepare for short tempers and impatience in other drivers over Labor Day weekend. Be courteous and careful. As with any holiday, be on the lookout for drunk drivers over Labor Day.

Labor Day Travel Pit Stop Tips

Stop at parks along the way during your Labor Day travel. You and your kids can stretch your legs and you can eat your sandwiches at an available picnic table. If you need to make an unscheduled bathroom break, try to avoid gas stations. Fast food restaurants usually have clean facilities.

If it's after dark and you need to get out and walk around, try to find a 24-hour retail store. These are safe places to take a break from your Labor Day travels.

Labor Day weekend is a great time to travel. Plan ahead and stay safe as you enjoy Labor Day travel.
