5 Largest Stadiums in the World

Lee Andrew Henderson
Everyone seems to be in agreement that the most popular sport in America is the National Football League. If the NFL is so popular then why do they sell out 50,000 seat stadiums while many college football programs sellout stadiums of up to 100,000 seat stadiums or more? College football stadiums are the biggest of any sport in the United States but where do they rank among the largest stadiums in the world?

#5 Beaver Stadium
Capacity: 107,282 seats
Beaver Stadium is located in University Park, Pennsylvania and is the home stadium of the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Nittany Lions' home is the second largest stadium in the United States, beating out the likes of Neyland Stadium (102,037) and Ohio Stadium (102,329). Beaver Stadium is actually located in the same place as the original 46, 284-seat stadium in 1960. The stadium has been expanded on many times.

#4 Michigan Stadium
Capacity: 107,501 seats
Michigan Stadium also nicknamed "The Big House" is the fourth largest stadium in the world and the largest stadium in the United States. In a game at home against the Connecticut Huskies, Michigan Stadium broke the record for the highest attendance ever at a college football game. 113,090 fans showed up to watch the Wolverines and Huskies that day. The city that Michigan Stadium is located in, Ann Arbor, is only 114,000 so the entire city could almost fit inside of the stadium.

#3 Estadio Azteca
Capacity: 114,465 seats
The Estadio Azteca is located in Mexico and holds 114,465 people. If college football isn't the sport with the biggest stadiums then what is? Soccer of course. Estadio Azteca is the home to Mexico's National team and has hosted the finals of two World Cups. Some of the greatest moments in soccer history have occured at Estadio Azteca. The 1986 quarterfinals between England and Argentina occured in the Estadio Azteca. Two of the most memorable plays of all-time, "The Hand of God" and "the Goal of the Century", occured in that game. Estadio Azteca was also the host to the "Game of the Century", a 4 - 3 overtime win by Italy over West Germany in the 1970 semifinals.

#2 Salt Lake Stadium
Capacity: 120,000
If you're wondering how Utah got the second biggest stadium in the world then let me inform you that this is not Salt Lake City, Utah. Salt Lake City is also the name of a district in Kolkata, India. Salt Lake Stadium is the home to three of the largest clubs in Indian football (Mohun Bagan AC, East Bengal FC, and Mohammedan SC) as well as the Indian national team. Salt Lake Stadium is also sometimes the host of athletic events similar to the Olympics, like the South Asian Games.

#1 Rungnado May Day Stadium
Capacity: 150,000
The largest stadium in the world is located in Pyongyang, North Korea. Once it is believed that 190,000 people crammed into the Rungnado May Day Stadium for a professional wrestling event of all things. Like the two previous stadiums the Rungnado May Day stadium is used mainly for soccer, including the home of the national team. Rungnado May Day Stadium is also used for massive performances, usually to celebrate Kim Il-Sung and the country of North Korea.
