- Get a Cafepress.com shop!
If you don't know what Cafepress.com is then head on over at this moment. Cafepress allows it's users to create an online shop from which they can sell products to anyone who is online and make a profit for themselves. The only thing you have to invest is time and patience. Take the time to create some cool graphics and a cool business logo for yourself and place it on all of the Cafepress shop items available. Once you do that, promote the shop on your site, offline to your regular customers, or buy some gear for yourself to have to sell from your dorm as well. This will be great free advertising that others will be doing for you at all times of the day. Tip: Don't forget to add your shop's website on the gear you sell.
- Don't give if they don't pay.
This is something that you should always remember and not do no matter what; don't ever offer your products on credit! If you are starting a business then the point is to make a profit for yourself, not end up taking loses because people refuse to pay for what they already took and cant' give back. Note: It's a good idea to let your close friends know that you will not be giving anything on credit from the beginning; that way they always have that in mind.
- Create a website, a forum, or a group page for your business
Everyone knows that college students are all about being online these days, and that's why building a website, a forum, or a group page is a must. Just think of what that could mean for you. You could hold chats, post announcements and specials, or you can use it as a place to gather suggestions for your business. Try starting out with a group page and then moving on to a website. Tip: Facebook groups are great for this type of business.
- Get a partner
This may sound like something that you don't want to do, but just think of what it could mean for your business if you could have a partner selling in another dorm building or on a different floor from you. Note: This may be something that will take some time to work out, and before doing this consider drawing up a contract stating the terms of partnership.
- Collect emails and start a mailing list
You're probably thinking that this is going to be something hard to do, however it won't be I promise. There are 3 ways in which you can get emails to start a mailing list for your business; those three ways are: your personal email contact list, ask your current customers to sign up for it at the time they purchase a product, and allow mailing list signups online at your site or group page. Once you have a mailing list send out cool articles, specials, and even just memos and notes from you to your customers on a weekly or monthly basis.
