For the video game industry the mega convention E3 is the arena where the three home console makers present their big holiday guns. The buzz leading up to and following the show is tremendous. This years presentations proved more than ever that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all doing everything in their power to win the hearts and wallets of every type of gamer. With formidable titles announced and demoed and even a brand new hand-held game device unveiled, the 2010 fall looks to be one of the best and most expensive for gamers in a long time.
With so many great titles introduced for the end of the year, it is difficult to narrow down a list of the 5 most anticipated games. We are in the lucky situation where it would be easy to create a top 5 list for each of the three consoles. However, I have tried to go through the varied offerings and come up with the 5 titles I think we gather the most interest from the game community.
Kirby's Epic Yarn
One of the greatest surprise hits of E3 was the announcement of a new Kirby game for the Nintendo Wii. 10 years after the last home console game in the series, the lovable pink Kirby returns in a game that looks and feels absolutely amazing. The graphics of the game is set in a knitted world where Kirby interacts with his environment by unraveling loose threads to peel away parts of the game environment or rolls his enemies up into balls of yarn.
Kirby's epic yarn plays as a traditional 2D platform game. While it retains some of the trademark features of other Kirby games such as changing the shape of Kirby to perform different task, the signature move of swallowing enemies has been removed. As always with games in the Kirby series, the gameplay looks rock solid, and the unusual graphic style works very well. The game has been receiving rave reviews from early players.
Kirby's Epic Yarn is scheduled for a fall 2010 release.
Halo Reach
Also releasing this fall is Halo Reach, the follow up to the most successful Xbox 360 game and one of the best selling games of all time, Halo 3. Halo Reach concludes the Halo series and for this alone it is greatly anticipated. The game builds on the first person experience of the Halo series while also adding a new element of space flight and space combat.
Already extensively played through a public online beta release Halo Reach looks to improve on Halo 3 in every way. The excellent online multiplayer section is being improved by adding even more game modes that will keep fans of the series playing it for a long time.
Halo Reach releases on September 14th and is sure to create quite a stir.
Fallout New Vegas
The Fallout series also returns with a new installment this fall. The series is as always set in a post nuclear world where waring factions of surviving humans and mutants make for a hostile world to navigate. The Fallout games are role playing games that focus on developing your game character and discovering an overarching story. The latest installment is set in the remains of Las Vegas.
Always stunningly beautiful, the Fallout series also has a reputation for telling a compelling and absorbing story. Fans of futuristic action and role playing adventures can get their hands on a top quality offering on October 28th.
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Another old Nintendo fan favorite returns in time for the holidays. The Donkey Kong Country series gets a new entry on the Wii. This is a game fans have been asking for for a long time, and finally Nintendo will listen. Donkey Kong Country is a side scrolling platform game and the success of New Super Mario Bros Wii has probably helped this game into development. The gameplay is similar to last years great Mario title and this Donkey Kong game even features multiplayer mode where players can team up as Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong.
Donkey Kong Country is a truly classic video game series, but new players who enjoyed Super Mario Bros. on the Wii will have a great time with this title.
Fable III
Xbox 360 owners will also get their fill of role playing goodness with a new entry in the Fable series. This action role playing game will have the player leading a movement to overthrow a tyrant King. Eventually the player becomes the new ruler of the land and will have to manage the kingdom and respond to other neighboring nations.
Fable III promises to deliver a deep game experience as well as a unique game environment. Currently locked in to an October 26th release the game is sure to be a hot Christmas gift this season
