Wardrobe
Many people are first exposed to the idea of a hidden passageway from the story, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe . While this door doesn't lead to a new land, it does bring magic to the house. From a dark room like the one in the book, the wardrobe opens into a door that leads to a hidden playroom.
Bookcase
One of the classic hidden doorways is a bookcase. Many people will think of the funny scene from the movie, Young Frankenstein , where candles have to be removed or placed to make the bookcase open and close like a door. However, the bookcase doesn't have to be that big. The bookcase can be small and open into a small room like this bookcase that opens into a small study room.
Staircase
There are many ways a staircase could hide a hidden room. Louise Kircher and her husband got a surprise in the Mesa, Arizona house that they bought when they both retired. At first, it looked just like a staircase in the master bedroom. There was nothing different about that. However, they soon found out that a remote operated the stairs so they moved up and revealed a doorway to another room.
Hidden Garage
The Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco has strict appearance codes. However, one company wanted to install a garage on the bottom floor of a property in that area. They couldn't build a garage like most people picture on the side of a house. The building looks like a Victorian building. However, part of it opens. There are two doors that open inward to access a garage.
The Cupboard Under the Stairs
A doorway is easily hidden under the stairs in a house. This is like in the Harry Potter books that mention the cupboard under the stairs. However, this house doesn't have any space for living under the stairs. Instead, in the cupboard, there are sectioned shelves. Shoes and other miscellaneous items can be stored in the cupboard.
