5 Must Have Items for Every Breastfeeding Mother

Sarah Rachel
As a nursing mother with a baby and a toddler, there are a few must have items that make my job much easier. If you're thinking of getting a gift for a breastfeeding mother who is in need, then this list should help you to find the perfect item.

1). Boppy Pillow. I love this pillow because it provides support which is something I really need since I am taller than most women. The boppy can also be used to nestle your newborn when you need to take a quick break. The boppy helps to cradle the baby up closer to your breast. It also helps to provide support for your arms. There are many wonderful nursing pillows on the market and I've tried a few, some that work by wrapping around your entire body, but the boppy is my favorite.

2). Breast Pump- A breast pump has really helped especially when I am on the go with two kids. I don't always have time to sit down and nurse the baby especially when I have my energetic toddler with me. I prefer a hand held manual pump because of the portability. The pump I like is the Avent Isis manual breast pump. However, some women prefer an electric pump. If the mother is planning to go back to work and continue breastfeeding an electric breast pump is the best choice. This is because you can usually get much more milk at a faster rate, depending on the pump. Prices range from $40-$300 so choose wisely.

3). Lansinoh Cream- This is a must have for any new breastfeeding mother. The first few weeks of breastfeeding can cause sore nipples, and this product helped me get through it. It also helps to moisturize the nipples when they get dry and cracked.

4). Nursing Tops. A good nursing bra is wonderful, but nursing tops are also a must have item for any breastfeeding mother. I love them because they have a built in nursing bra, and they are light weight and comfortable. You can wear them around the house, and some of my nursing shirts have slits in them for great access when I need to nurse the baby. I love nursing tops by motherwear.

5). Receiving blankets- Of course this is a no brainier. Most nursing mothers need a way to cover up when they are out an about. I know I like to be covered and a simple receiving blanket is all I need.

Most of these products can also be found at Target, Wal-Mart, and most other stores.
