5 Must-Have Fall Fashions for Dogs

Dr. Jamie Yvette
If you are a fashion-conscious dog owner, you have probably given considerable thought to your pooch's fall wardrobe. While this may seem like total nonsense to the unenlightened dog owner who doesn't care if Max or Princess looks drab in the buff, you know that your dog deserves to sport attire that lets his or her personality shine. The following fall fashions are "must-haves" for every fashion-conscious dog owner.

#1: Outerwear (Hoodies, Jackets, Coats, Rainwear)

Among the most important and yet frequently overlooked must-have fall fashions for dogs are those items of clothing that fall under the category of outerwear. Aside from getting your dog noticed, outerwear serves a few practical purposes as well. A fashionable hoodie is perfect for family road trips, outdoor sporting events or casual walks in the park - particularly when the temperature outside becomes a bit nippy. When cool weather turns into flat-out cold, a comfortable jacket or light coat will help your dog stay warmer than ever. And don't forget the raincoat! Not only will this help keep your dog dry on those wet days, but it will also cut down on the amount of water that he or she drips on your floor when it's time to come inside.

#2: Denim Jeans

Another must-have fall fashion for your dog - particularly if you have a toy dog or another small breed - is at least one pair of denim jeans. No pup is truly fashionable without a pair of jeans! Denim jeans have a timeless quality about them and add distinction to your beloved pooch. They are perfect for short family outings or trips to the pet store.

#3: Sweaters

I own a Maltese who happens to LOVE it when it's time to put on a sweater. In fact, he jumps up and down and turns around in circles when I break out his sweater collection each fall. I may be biased, but I happen think that most dog breeds look adorable in sweaters! While some dogs may be more thrilled about wearing them than others, sweaters are must-have fall fashions for any dog that needs a little added warmth during the cool fall months.

#4: Formal Wear

Fashion-conscious dog owners who are all about their pets never pass on an opportunity to dress them up for special occasions. They dress them in formal attire for outdoor weddings, family photo shoots and other special events where it's important to have every member of the family looking their very best. For this reason, at least one formal outfit is a must-have fall fashion for your dog!

#5: Holiday Fashions

The fall months are usually quite festive, with occasions such as Halloween drawing literally millions of customers to shopping malls and online internet stores. I waited until the last minute for two years in a row to buy my dog a Halloween costume, and he suffered miserably because of it (having to be a witch one year and Little Red Riding Hood the next, which for a boy dog, is simply not cool). In order to maximize your options, holiday attire for your dog is a must-have that you should pursue as early as you can.
