The Facts About Safe Sex

When it comes to safe sex, condoms are one effective resource that should always be used. Unfortunately, there are many myths and misinformation that continue to be spread about condoms and their usage. Before you decide condoms are not effective enough to bother with, read these myths and learn the truth about using condoms.

Myth #1: Condoms do not protect from STDs.

This myth is absolutely false. When properly used, a condom can prevent the spread of HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and many other STDs that spread through bodily fluids. Laboratory tests have shown that latex condoms create a barrier to STD pathogens that is impermeable. With consistent and correct use, condoms will protect you and your partners from many STDs.

However it is important to note that STDs which are passed through skin to skin contact, such as herpes and genital warts, can still be spread even when using a condom.

Myth #2: Condoms decrease pleasure.

This may have once been true, but today condom companies have gone out of their way to make condoms an exciting part of a sexual experience. There are several styles available today that both provide pleasure and safety. Ribs, ridges, warming lubrication, and even flavors have all been added to condoms without detracting from the protective aspects.

Myth #3: People who are allergic to latex cannot use condoms.

The majority of condoms sold today are made from latex and can cause serious problems for people who are allergic to the substance. Luckily there are many latex alternatives available that provide equal protection. Polyurethane condoms are one alternative type that can be found in stores along side the latex options. Even people who suffer from a latex allergy should enjoy safe and healthy sex lives.

Myth #4: Condoms can be washed and reused.

While reusing many things is more Eco-friendly, reusing a condom is always a bad idea. Condoms are designed to be used once, and once only. The heat and friction created during sex can weaken a condom, decreasing it's effectiveness. Though condoms are created to withstand this stress once, they are not expected to withstand multiple uses without breaking down and losing their ability to protect.

Myth #5: You have to be 18-years-old to purchase condoms.

Many teens are hesitant about buying condoms openly, and the myth that there is an age limit on purchasing them only decreases the condom rates further. However, in the US there are no known age requirements to buying condoms. Teens of any age can purchase condoms without age restrictions or threat of trouble from law officers.

Safe sex should be on every one's list of priorities. Using condoms is a simple and effective way to have an enjoyable sexual experience, while still being safe and protected. Busting the common myths about condoms with facts will increase condom usage and encourage safe sex for everyone.
