5 Negative Calorie Foods

Negative Calorie foods are foods which allegedly require more energy to burn off than they actually provide, making them a popular choice for dieters. Mainly fruits and vegetables, they provide very high nutritional value for very few calories.

Carrots
Not just good for your eyes, carrots are a filling negative calorie food that is ideal for cooking or eating raw.
High in:Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene
Preparation Ideas:Munch on carrots as the perfect afternoon snack, or steam as a side-dish with lunch or dinner.

Spinach
Pop-Eye had it right with this super food. Spinach is incredibly low in calories and an excellent source of a number of different nutrients.
High in:Vitamin A, Beta-Carotene, Folate, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K and Iron
Preparation Ideas:Lay a foundation of leaves and add tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and bell peppers for a Greek spinach salad.

Berries - Blackberries, Raspberries and Blueberries
Most berries are considered negative calorie foods, and these three are notorious favorites. Sweet and bite-sized, they make a perfect dessert or snack.
High in: Vitamin C, Manganese (blackberry), Vitamin K (blackberry), Iron (raspberry), antioxidants (blueberries)
Preparation Ideas:Mix a berry salad with a citrus and mint garnish for breakfast or desert.

Grapefruit
As a snack or a beverage, grapefruit is a popular choice for those seeking an immunity boost or just a filling snack.
High in: Vitamin C
Preparation Ideas:Eat half for breakfast with a dash of Splenda or a drizzling of honey; or juice the whole fruit for a delicious, refreshing drink.

Tomatoes
Whether technically a fruit or a vegetable, it doesn't matter, tomatoes are a staple for building negative calorie snacks and meals.
High in: Vitamin C, Lycopene
Preparation Ideas:A must for any salad, but also delicious roasted, grilled or steamed as a side dish. To prepare as a snack, choose grape or plum tomatoes to eat fresh, or sun-dried tomatoes.
