The Jacksonville Jaguars surprised many NFL fans and experts when they decided to part ways with their starting quarterback just days before the 2011 NFL season started. The good news for David Garrard is there is always a need for a good starting quarterback with experience. Garrard's agent says he has already been offered back up roles for teams like Baltimore and New Orleans but Garrard is holding out for a starting job. These are five teams that could use David Garrard.
Carolina Panthers
If Garrard wants to start then a job with the Panthers might not be the best option. At this point it is too late to go back on Cam Newton being the Panthers starter. Do the Panthers have a Plan B though? What if Newton isn't good? What if Newton gets run happy and gets himself injured? Are the Panthers really prepared for another Jimmy Clausen experiment? Garrard wants to play for a team that will start him but if there isn't a team with a starting position then maybe he'd rather go to a team that could need a starter in the near future.
Washington Redskins
The Washington Redskins could use a starting quarterback that is better than Rex Grossman and John Beck and Garrard is definitely better. The problem is the Shanahans seem to actually like both Grossman and Beck. Why? I don't know. Also, if the Redskins were to replace Beck/Grossman it would likely be with a new, young quarterback-of-the-future type and not another experienced player, even if Garrard is significantly better than what they have.
Indianapolis Colts
Peyton Manning could be out for the entire season. The Jaguars just released their starting quarterback. The Texans always choke the second half of the season. The AFC South looks wide open for anybody to grab. Why wouldn't the team that just lost their quarterback in the South go and get the quarterback in the South that just became available? It is a division that Garrard knows well and he would get to play against his former team.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers may be the most likely candidate for Garrard's services. It's hard to believe but Alex Smith has now been a NFL quarterback for seven seasons. Surely the 49ers don't still believe he is going to get better. Surely they realize they need to end the Smith era and bring in somebody new. Right?
Seattle Seahawks
The 49ers might be the most likely candidate but the Seahawks are the team that needs a quarterback the most. The Seahawks were the surprise of 2010 as they weaseled into the playoffs and even upset the Saints in the first round. The Seahawks made several additions to the team and while they seem to be collecting names rather than building a team that fits, it could be argued that they will be better in 2011. That is, if they had a quarterback that wasn't the worst in the entire NFL.
