5 of the Oddest Fried Foods
#5- Deep Fried Oreo Cookies
I really want to know who is responsible for this abomination of the classic Oreo. I mean, isn't an Oreo good enough without having to dip it into a batter and then fry it up in oil. However, my kids are tempted to try this deep fried dish. I think I am too much of a food traditionalist and will just keep my Oreo's plain with a glass of milk to wash them down.
#4- Deep Fried Cicadas
Cicadas are an insect. A bug. They have been called locusts although they don't belong to that family at all. They have also been called "jar flies", "heat bugs" and "dry flies". And someone thought it would be a good idea to eat them deep fried. According to the University of Cincinnati-Clermont College, Cicadas are and have been a delicacy all over the world. They have a recipe for Cicada "Shrimp" that batter dips the bug, fries it up and puts it in a cocktail glass here.
#3- Fried Spaghetti and Meatballs on a Stick
Okay, there are several things wrong with this. First, spaghetti and meatballs should never be placed on a stick. Second, spaghetti and meatballs should never need to be batter dipped and fried up firm enough to place on a stick. But alas, people go to the Minn. State Fair often to get this deep fried combination every year. Sometimes they follow it up with fried pork on a stick, deep fried cheese curds, and fried fruit on a stick.
#2- Deep Fried Mars Bars
Chill a Mars bar, dip it in a coconut batter or any type of batter and then deep fry in oil to make a delicious dessert. You can do this with Snickers bars or any other candy bar also. It almost sounds awful to fry a Mars bar or a Snickers bar but I assure you this dish is surprisingly good. Best served with ice cream.
#1- Deep Fried Coca-Cola
Coca-Cola flavored batter is mixed up then deep fried in oil for this fair food. After frying the batter is given a drizzle of Coca-Cola fountain syrup and topped with cinnamon sugar, whipped cream and a cherry. Fried coke has been a happy addition to the Texas State Fair since 2006 when Abel Gonzalez, Jr. came up with the idea. He is also the guy who created the fried peanut butter, banana and jelly sandwich. He won the creativity honor in 2006 for his fried coke at the Big Tex Choice Awards Contest.

You haven't truly lived until you've had deep fried hotdish on a stick!
The mars bars or snickers sound good. (not like Callies candy though)
Fried Oreos? Wow that is weird! Intereasting topic!
I like deep-fried Oreos. The pickles sound really disgusting tho- but I would give em a try
I like fried pickles! fun write up here ;)
Wow, they can (and do) fry anything, I actually tried fried pickles for the first time yesterday..they were yummy, but some of these other things...not so sure!!
Fried Coke? I can't even wrap my mind around that one.
Abel Gonzalez is also the person behind fried butter of Oprah fame. He made fried chocolate this year. Fried chili pie is the big fair food this year. I posted a recipe for a homemade version. It makes a good party food and one or two pieces are plenty.
Ugh. Just ugh.
