5 Pairs of Shoes Every Woman Should Own

The fashion world has a natural ebb and flow to it. One day the hottest icons are draped in baggy, hobo-inspired gear, and the next day they're sporting something chic and manicured. Of course, each individual has her own unique sense of style. But it's always fun to play with the season's trends. That's why every woman should invest in these five different types of shoes. Planning a trip? Downsizing your shoe rack? Splurging on a new pair? To spare your wallet and ensure you always have a perfect pair to run to (no matter the event or location), stick to these five basic styles.

The High-Heel Stiletto (or Wedge)

A basic, high-heeled shoe is a necessary ingredient for any woman's wardrobe. These must-have shoes can dress up a pair of jeans or even serve as the perfect accent to both long and short dresses.

When deciding between a stiletto or wedge, note that many fashion experts stress the importance of a stiletto shoe. However, a high-heel wedge can be equally as fashionable. Cynthia Nellis, a fashion expert from About.com who's previously been featured in publications like People Magazine and Family Circle agrees.

"A high heel wedge is just as useful as a stiletto and even easier to walk in," says the fashion guru. "Whichever you choose, a high-heel shoe is essential to elongate your legs and transform your look."

The Comfortable Slip-On

Every woman, old and young, needs a comfortable pair of stylish slip-on shoes. Though comfort is often synonymous with unfashionable, Nellis firmly insists that this casual essential doesn't have to be a frumpy one. For example, try a ballet slipper, an earthy moccasin or a solid flat with a modern design.

"I own a fun pair of zebra-stripe moccasins and a metallic pair," Nellis says. "These flats are perfect for wearing with jeans on the weekend or anytime you have lots of walking to do. They're also much more stylish than your running shoes."

Whether you're off to the grocery store or spending a low-key evening with your girlfriends, you can't go wrong with the comfortable slip-on.

The Gym Shoe

It goes without saying that exercise is vital to a woman's health and happiness. That's why a pair of shoes that are gym-worthy are a must-have in any closet. You don't have to purchase expensive shoes fit for an athletic superstar, but choose a shoe that meets the needs of your feet.

According to many foot specialists, including Steven Raikin, MD, exercise shoes should be comfortable immediately. Walk or jog around the store before committing to your purchase and understand that breaking in shoes is a myth that leads to injuries.

The Fashionable Sneaker

A woman should always have a good pair of fashionable, low-top sneakers. Though equally as comfortable, the fashionable sneaker is a bit different from the slip-on.

Think Converse Chuck Taylor or your standard, stark-white Keds, says Paul Spataro, a 38-year-old from Los Angeles who works in the fashion industry. Spataro has worked with fashionable celebrity icons like Mariah Carey, Daisey Fuentes and Cybill Shepherd.

"This type of shoe can be worn with sundresses, jeans or pretty much any dressed-down type of look," he says. "A fashionable sneaker will definitely cover many occasions in a woman's life."

The Tall Boot

When you hear the word boot, try to push away thoughts of bulky snow gear or gaudy cowboy garb. Instead, think of the tall boot in your closet as you would the meat and potatoes in your kitchen: Absolutely, irrefutably essential to your pleasure and livelihood.

"Tall boots are extremely versatile," says Nellis. "For example, they allow for leggings or skinny jeans to be tucked in for a chic and casual look. They can also be worn with a knee-length skirt for an office-ready look."

And if that wasn't enough to convince you, think about this: Boots protect your feet from the elements of any season. Snow, sun, sleet or rain, your precious feet will thank you (and so will the fashion gods).
