Stacy J. Day
Most college students attend school full-time, and therefore do not have much time for working, especially a full-time job. Other college students may have the time, but simply choose to focus on his or her studies. For whatever reason, many college students don't have much money, so the car that they choose to drive will be a very important choice. If you or your child is a college student and you're searching for the perfect car, you may want to check out the following cars, or at least in similar categories.

Kia Sportage - This car, which is actually a compact SUV, is an excellent choice for college students for several reasons. First of all, as with all Kia cars, the Sportage is a definite gas saver. It only takes about 10 gallons to fill up a Sportage, which will save a great deal of money in the long run, especially with gas prices constantly creeping up. Kia Sportages are also great cars for college students because there's plenty of room in the hatchback for transporting books and other necessities for school, and there's also ample room for carpooling as well. Kia Sportages are also very economical, and a new Sportage costs under $17,000.

Ford Fiesta - Since many college students are single and don't have families, this compact and economical car is an excellent choice. It's compact, great on gas, and the cost of a brand new 2011 Ford Fiesta is around $13,000, although you don't have to get a brand new one to take advantage of this great car.

Ford Focus - Not only is this car stylish and sleek, but like the Fiesta, it's excellent on gas and only costs about $3,000 more than the Fiesta for a brand new model. Older models can be purchased at steep discounts and will function just a well as a new one provided it's in good mechanical condition.

Nissan Versa - If you like saving money on gas and driving trendy new cars, then the Versa is perfect for you. Despite it's compact size, it's got plenty of room for all of your necessities like groceries, books and more. A brand new Versa costs about $10,000 and is rated high among consumers, according to reports in U.S. News, Ranking & Reviews.

Toyota Yaris - If the current problems with Toyota vehicles hasn't scared you off, this car is another excellent choice for college students because of it's compact size and super-economical gas mileage. Also ranked pretty high in the U.S. News, Ranking & Reviews, this car costs as average of $13,000 brand new.

Ahhhh, this article brings back some memories and also asks the important question, "Public transit, or a small, compact car?" Yup, college is always tough when you've got to decide how to budget and you still want to have your own wheels, though!

Legs and bicycles can work really well for student who live on or near campus... and they are greener than the greenest cars.... and cheaper to maintain, too!
