Ariana R. Cherry-Shearer
These days with children and teenagers on the run from one place to another, a cell phone can be quite useful. Students are busy going out with friends, attending after school sporting practices, band or drama or perhaps---sometimes just running a little late and they have to let you know. Most features that are popular with students are keyboards that allow for quick texting, the ability to play video games or music and the touchscreen.

The first ideal phone for a student is the new LG enV Touch available from Verizon Wireless. It offers an external touch screen, Mp3 player and an internal QWERTY keyboard. Students can busy their fingers typing up messages to their friends or to mom and dad. Other applications the LG Touch offers are a calculator, calendar, drawing pad, notepad and a document viewer.

Another LG phone is the popular LG enV 3, also available from Verizon Wireless. For fast finger texters, it also offers a QWERTY keyboard for quick instant messaging. Students may also purchase Vcast videos to watch some of their favorite TV shows and listen to and watch their favorite music videos. Other accessories include a 3.0 Mega-pixel Camera & Camcorder with Flash, MP3 player and the ability to store up to 16GB of micro SD. The LG enV is also voice mail capable and connect to the Mobile Web. It also has IM chat applications such as Yahoo or AOL.

For more video viewing and Bluetooth capabilities, Verizon also offers the Motorola Rival A455. Like the other LG products, it also has a QWERTY keyboard and the ability to subscribe to Vcast Videos. The keyboard slides out from under the phone unlike the other two LG's which flip open. The Motorola also has a one touch access to its application. The cell phone is free to new and current Verizon Wireless subscribers.

For parents on a budget, Verizon Wireless also offers another free phone to new and current subscribers. The Palm® Pixi™ Plus has texting advantages with the QWERTY keyboard, is WiFi ready and has a 3G Mobile Hot Spot. For storage, it offers 8 GB of flash memory and has a MP3 player to play favorite tunes. For students who enjoying using yahoo messenger or other chat application, they are also available to use on the Palm Pixi Plus too. If students want to view homework assignments on the run or view a report, the cell phone cal also view Microsoft Word, Excel®, PowerPoint®, and PDF documents.

Last of all, one other freebie for parents signing their students up for a cell phone contract with Verizon is the BlackBerry Curve 8530. It supports English, Spanish and French languages. For Internet connections, it also has mobile broadband through Windows only and is WiFi ready. The BlackBerry Curve also has a QWERTY keyboard with Trackpad navigation. For students who want to store extra music, there is an SD slot capable of storing up to 16 GB of data.

There are a variety of cell phones that are free that still have useful and popular functions for your back to school student. Some of these cell phones are also free (with the purchase of a plan), which helps you as a parent keep your budget in check. There is no need for any parent to have to unload half of their income to purchase a special cell phone for their child who is in school.
