1. Use PayPal!
One of the easiest ways to safeguard yourself against unscrupulous sellers is simply to create and use a PayPal account. If you purchase an item with PayPal and do not receive the item, you can file a case with PayPal. If they find in your favor, you will be refunded the money in a timely manner.
2. Communicate with the seller before you pay.
Use E-Bay's internal messaging system to communicate with your seller once you have won the time. Simply ask him or her their preferred method of payment, if there is anything that may delay shipping, and if you can receive confirmation of shipment. If you do get into a dispute with a seller, you will have documentation with which to back your case.
3. Research the seller before you buy.
You won't always be able discern bad E-Bay sellers from the rest, but a quick look at their profiles can give you some clues. First off, just because they may have a negative feedback or two, don't automatically write the seller off. It is all about the actual percentage. A seller that has a rating of 98% or better is usually a safe bet. Also, don't be afraid to take a chance on new sellers. You just might be surprised. At worst, you'll probably have to communicate with him or her a little more often.
4. Carefully reach the E-Bay listing before you even bid.
The listing should provide you with details such as accepted payment methods, shipping costs, condition of the item, possible warranties, and return policies. It might possibly provide you with much more as well. Armed with all of this information, you should get a good sense of what to expect from the seller. It also helps in comparison purposes. No one wants to feel as though they didn't get a good deal on an item, especially on E-Bay.
5. Don't automatically assume the worst.
If you don't hear back from the seller in a reasonable amount of time or you don't receive your item when you expect it, don't automatically assume the worst. Shipping issues occur all of the time. Give the seller a chance to make things right and tell his or her side of the story. This simple tip will help you keep perspective and deal effectively with sellers. You don't want to get into a negative feedback or message war with someone over a simple error. A little respect on both ends goes a long way on E-Bay.
Keeping the above tips in mind, you can expect to enjoy many years of scoring great deals on E-Bay painlessly. It will also help you create a great reputation as an E-Bay buyer. If you ever decide to sell some of your own items on E-Bay, you will already have a reputation within the E-Bay community. In addition, you will get a first hand education on what works and what doesn't when it comes to being a seller. Whether or not you intend to eventually sell on E-Bay, being a buyer gives you access to all kinds of deals that you just won't find in a traditional store.
