You hear songs about being home for the holidays in your local supermarkets, bookstores, and offices. It's not just a nice message, it's your familial duty.

Why is it so important to be home for the holidays? What follows is five reasons why you should make every attempt to be with your family during this time.

1. Your Family Misses You.

These days, the world is busy. We are all caught up in our jobs, our personal lives, the political storm, the economic crisis, and our relationships. While we may keep in regular phone of email contact with our families, it's rare that families are brought together on a regular basis to sit down and enjoy each other's company. Families grew up together, and have bonds that are indisputable. It's natural to want to be with these people, but often we let our lives get in the way. The fact is, your brother misses playing catch with you, your sister misses joking around with you in your childhood language, and your parents miss listening to your arguments and views on the many worldly issues. Your family misses you and, of course, you miss them.

2. The Holidays are Recognized as an Important Non-Work Time.

While you may be caught up in your business life--making deals, arranging schedules, returning calls--the holidays are widely recognized as a time to set aside these other activities and goals, and simply be with those who enrich your life. Some may find excuses to work late every day, or put in weekend hours, but during the holiday season, it is unacceptable to be anywhere other than with your family. It is not the time to make excuses or set new appointments, it is a time to get on a plane, or in a car, or on a train, and see your loved ones.

3. The Holiday Season can be a Stress Reliever.

It is widely known that the holidays can be more of a stress inducer than a stress reliever, but this is strictly tied to the commercial aspect of the season. If handled correctly, you can make this time not only enjoyable and comfortable, but stress-free. The best way to manage a stress-free environment during the holidays is to avoid frustrations and arguments over petty issues, and focus instead on learning more about your family's accomplishments, successes, and hopes for the new year. It's amazing what a little positive conversation can do to recharge your batteries.

4. The Holidays Offer a Great Opportunity to Do Something Good for your Family

This time of year is all about giving. As kids we thought the opposite, but as adults we understand differently. Therefore, the holidays are the perfect opportunity to really thank your family for all that it has done for you. Perhaps your Mom talked you through a tough relationship this year, or your sister helped you manage that project a few months back when you were under the deadline, or maybe your Dad helped you to fix that issue with your car that was going to cost too much at the mechanic. The holidays give you the chance to thank your family, and really give something back to all of them.

5. Holidays are Memory Creators.

Being home for the holidays reminds nearly everyone of favorite memories. Perhaps when you were six, you got a remote controlled car that didn't work, and you cried through Christmas morning. Maybe your sister decided it would be funny to wrap the dog in all the leftover paper and ribbon. The holiday season gives you and your family a chance to recall these memories and, more importantly, create new memories. It is human to remember these times and share a laugh or a cry with your family. And, that is what this special time is all about.

Yeah - we need that time to relax and recharge during the holiday season.
