5 Reasons to Learn to Crochet

Cheryl Dennett
There are many reasons to learn to crochet. And, each person will have different reasons that are most important to them. Here are my top five reasons to learn to crochet.

The most important reason to learn to crochet is that you can make gifts for everyone on your list. Most people enjoy something that is handmade, especially for them, much more than a generic gift that is identical to someone else's. When you crochet a gift for someone, it is the only one like it. Even if someone follows the same pattern and uses the same yarn, it will still be a unique item. No two people can produce identical items. Each person will hold the yarn or the crochet a bit tighter or looser. Or, perhaps, one person will crochet much more quickly the another. Or there could be a combination of factors that will make the item you produce one-of-a-kind. As your skill develops with practice, you will be able to make more elaborate items to give to friends and family.

For many people, crocheting is a creative outlet. It is quite possible to start crocheting and not know what the end product will look like. Free-form crochet is a wonderful way to express your individuality and artistic talent. There have been many beautiful items made using this method. Just grab a skein of yarn and a crochet hook and start a project. You may be surprised what beautiful items you are able to produce.

Crocheting is a very portable hobby. The best way to carry your crochet projects is to have a large tote bag that will hold your yarn, crochet hooks, and patterns. To prevent your patterns from becoming tattered, it is a good idea to have a notebook or folder to keep them in. Not only will this keep them safe, they will also be more easily found in amongst your balls of yarn.

There are so many type of crocheting projects, you will be able to create something for everyone on your gift giving list. It is possible to crochet clothing, blankets, household items, toys, and many types of baby items. No matter who the intended recipient is to be, there is something you can crochet for them to enjoy.

It is also possible to make money selling the items you crochet. You can sell them at craft fairs, on the internet, or at consignment shops. Since there are not a lot of people who have the time or inclination to learn to crochet, the items you make are in demand. You may not be able to make a fortune, but if you work at it, you will be able to sell items you create for a respectable price.

No matter what your reason for learning to crochet, you will enjoy the hobby. You can learn to make unique items to give as gifts or use yourself. Either way, the item you produce will be something you have made with your own hands and there is not another one like it, anywhere.

You've inspired me. I started learning several years ago and quit when life got too busy.
