5 Reasons You Shouldn't Invite Your New Boyfriend to Thanksgiving Dinner

Stephanie Modkins
Unfortunately, there are times you shouldn't invite a new boyfriend to Thanksgiving dinner. They are ones in which his presence will only cause more trouble than good. Below are five of them. If you see yourself in any of these situations, reconsider your decision to ask him over.

1) You're not committed yet.

Although you're in strong like, the fact that your beau is fresh of the rack is a sure sign of no commitment. You barely know each other. As a result, you're probably not ready to spend the holidays together. Instead, let him be with his family while you do the same with yours. You can see each other after the festivities and talk about how crazy your relatives are.

2) Your family is going to grill him.

For whatever reason, the people closest to you will feel a need to grill your sweetheart if he shows up on turkey day. This reality is the number one reason you shouldn't invite your new boyfriend to Thanksgiving dinner. Unless he has thick skin, he'll be uncomfortable for most of the night. Your relatives will force him to discuss the future and how you fit into it and this is something best said - initially - in private between him and you.

3) He may assume you're serious.

Let's face it. Some of us have the kind of families that require a "buffer" to be around. Buffers are people who help soften the impact of doing an activity we don't like. If this describes you, consider all of the consequences. While you think your new boyfriend is just supporting you through a tough day, he may be thinking you're getting closer and more serious. The best way to avoid this type of misunderstanding is to just grit your teeth and bear your family alone or to invite a female friend who has your back.

4) Your boyfriend can't stay for long.

One of the biggest offenses a guest can do to the host of a holiday dinner is leaving early. Keep this in mind when you're thinking about asking your guy home for turkey day. You shouldn't invite your new boyfriend to Thanksgiving dinner if he's too busy to stay a few hours or has to divide time with his own family. You'll save him the grief of hurting a host's feelings and then having to fight through this faux pas with your family during another get together.

5) His mother really wants him home.

There's nothing like pitting heads against a new boyfriend's mother. Seven times out of ten, she'll have more influence than you and he'll eventually break up. As a result, the best policy is to wait until your relationship is long-term and you're presence or his absence is expected during the holidays by his mom.

These 5 situations are reasons why you shouldn't invite your new boyfriend to Thanksgiving Day. Since you're relationship is slow, take slow strides and try to build what you have into something fabulous.
