5 Reasons to Unschool

Brenda Hoffman
There are lots of children in school today who simply sit through long hours in the classroom simply wishing they could get on with it and go play. Many children also find themselves having to attend school when it is still summer outside. These are just a few of the things that unschoolers don't have to worry about because their classroom is wherever they want it to be.

Learning Outdoors
There are lots of things that can be learned outdoors. For instance, horticulture (the study of gardening) will teach children about growing and harvesting an assortment of vegetables. Of course, children can also learn about container gardening too.

Learning English By Doing It
Instead of sitting with an English book in hand, children can learn by participating in a writing group. They can even go so far as to learn how to write a query letter to publishers, research genealogy and write creative nonfiction and books.

Learning Math From Living Life
A lot of unschool children eventually come to a point when they want to open their own business. In doing so they begin learning about things like taxes and adding up long strings of numbers because they are selling things. Even if your child doesn't want to open their own business he can learn about money and budgeting by having an allowance and going to the store.

Have Recess Anytime
Whenever your child is tired of sitting still, he can get up and run around '" burn off some energy. There is no need to be in a fake environment where you have to raise your hand to go to the bathroom or wait for recess in order to be able to take a short walk. On the other hand, if your child really gets into what he is doing, there is no need to take a break until he is ready to do so.

Choosing What You Want To Do, When You Want To Do It
Your child will be able to choose whatever it is that he wants to do and for how long he wants to do it. This gives him the opportunity to actually finish what he starts. Then once he decides he is done with that, he can then go on to study whatever else he is interested in learning about that day.

I think unschool philosophies can be incorporated into any homeschool without specifically unschooling and I appreciate it for that reason.

I remember when my employees would suggest going outside to work when the weather was gorgeous like during early spring and early fall!
